Buttock implants
The purpose of a buttock implant (gluteoplasty/gluteal augmentation) is to make the shape of the buttocks more defined.
What does the procedure involve?
Buttock implants are usually made of silicone. Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision between the buttock cheeks and a space is made behind the upper buttock muscle, where the implant is placed. The incision is then stitched.
What are the benefits and what are the risks?
Benefits
The main benefit is that through surgery, buttocks appear rounder and more curvaceous, which diet and exercise cannot achieve. Implants vary in size so you can achieve the look you are after.
Risks
As this part of the body is used for so many activities, such as walking and sitting, it is probably one of the most painful procedures during the recovery period, compared to other cosmetic surgery. Risks can include infection, bleeding and collection of fluid which are risks associated with most surgery. As incisions are made, scarring can occur and the scar is located between the buttock cheeks. Scars however do fade with time but the severity of the scar will depend on the individual. In some cases the implant may move or even rupture which may mean it has to be removed, which is not a straightforward procedure.
Is it the right procedure for me?
The main reason for choosing to have buttock implants is that the buttocks may appear small in size or saggy and implants will make them more round and shapely in appearance. However, in some cases it is other parts of the body that give the buttocks this appearance, such as the legs or waist, so it is necessary to talk to your doctor or surgeon to identify whether implants are the right procedure to achieve the look you are after.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes between one and two hours depending on the size of the implant and the complexity of the procedure.
What happens after surgery?
After surgery you will need to stay in hospital for at least one night and be required to lie face down for 48 hours. When leaving hospital your buttocks will have dressing on them and you will be required to wear a corset. As the dressing needs to remain dry, you will not be able to shower or bathe the area for between 7 and 10 days. Depending on the individual you may also need to take a week off work to rest and should refrain from any exercise for six weeks. Final results are seen after approximately 3 months, when all swelling and bruising has gone down.
How much is it likely to cost?
This is a relatively new procedure to the UK and prices will vary.

I am keen to get buttock imolants but there doesnt seem to be to many places in the u.k that are performing this procedure, could you advise me where there are clinics with this procedure, or whether it is better to go abroad. thanks
Hi Carly,
I know that MYA Cosmetic Surgery offer this proceedure as I was just talking to them about it the other day as it is something I am very interested in myself!
All of our experts would advise against going abroad as cosmetic surgery does not simply stop after the proceedure takes place. You will need aftercare and check ups and plent of rest. Travelling home a few days after surgery could be very unfortable and stressful.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know how you get on!

Hi there, I am aware that prices vary but i was wondering if it’s possible for me to be given a rough idea of how much the buttock implants surgery usualy costs? I have searched on many websites to get a rough idea of prices but have been unsuccessful and do not have a clue how much they cost. Even if I could have a minumum or maximum price of how much it may cost; that would be great.
Thank You

Hiya,
I have just turned 18 and buttock implants are something i am very interested in. I am planning on having them done towards the end of 2008. Could you give me a price of how much they will cost please. Also when would i have to book for my consultation if i have them done at the end of 2008. Also what financial options would be available for me? I am in full time emplyment, but live with parents. Please advise.
Yours Amanda
Hi Amanda,
They will discuss prices with you during your free consultation but they start from around £7,200.
We would advise that you book in a for the free consultation a few months before you would like to have the proceedure. That way you can get all the information and have time to reflect.
