Liposuction
The purpose of liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and liposculpture) is to remove fat and reduce the number of fat cells in order to reshape areas of the body that are resistant to a healthy diet and exercise
What does the procedure involve?
Most body parts are able to be suctioned, though the most popular areas of the body where women have treatment include the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks and knees. During surgery the surgeon will make tiny incisions in the skin and then use a hollow metal tube called a cannula to break up the fat cells beneath the skin. The fat is then sucked out with a syringe or a vacuum pump. Ultrasound waves or an injection of fluid may be used as an alternative method, to break up the fat before suctioning it out.
What are the benefits and what are the risks?
Benefits
Results are permanent providing that your weight remains stable. If you do gain weight after treatment you are most likely to put it on in the places where surgery has not been performed, as there are a higher number of fat cells. One thing to note however, is that Liposuction will not reduce dimpling or cellulite. In addition, if the skin is flabby, for example after significant weight loss or pregnancy, liposuction may make it look worse.
Risks
The risks from surgery tend to be the result of the level of competency of the surgeon and anesthetist, as rare but fatal complications may arise including pulmonary oedema (collection of fluid in the lungs) or lidocaine toxicity. Blood clots may also occur if a piece of fat travels into the blood stream, though the surgeon will use anti-embolism boots during the procedure to prevent this. Other risks from this type of surgery include numbness, nerve damage and scarring. Patients who have ultrasound-assisted liposuction also risk internal and external burning. Unevenness may occur in the area treated, usually due to poor surgical technique, though touch-ups may be performed six months after the original surgery to try to rectify this. It is extremely important therefore that when considering surgery that you talk to and use a surgeon who is highly qualified and experienced.
Is it the right procedure for me?
Liposuction is often used by women as a last resort after diet and exercise has been unsuccessful in altering the body shape or reducing fat in areas that they are unhappy with. Liposuction should not be used as an alternative to diet and exercise. When considering liposuction you should consider all of the facts, including the potential risks, and talk to a qualified surgeon who will be able to advise you whether it is the ‘right’ procedure for you.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthetic and can take up to two hours depending on the amount of fat removed or the type of technique chosen.
What happens after surgery?
Immediately after surgery you can expect to feel swelling, bruising and pain, though this will subside in a few days and should go down completely over about three weeks. You may even experience puffiness in areas where surgery was not performed like the face feet and hands. You will be expected to wear a special elastic compression garment for about a week after the procedure. Some people experience itching, which can be relieved using a rich moisturiser. You may need to take a few days off work and avoid exercise for a couple of weeks.
How much is it likely to cost?
Prices vary depending on how much suction is performed, but prices generally vary between £4,000 and £8,000

I need liposuction on my knees. I had a knee replacement and the doctoc had to leave a large amount of fat around the knee. Causing pain and the knee not working right. I have been loosing weight. Lost 34 pounds so far, and the fat from my knees is hangingl. I do not want to have knee surgury, as I think getting rid of the fat around the knee is the part of the problem. Is lipsuction a better option at this time than a scope. Knee replacement was done March 1, 2007
Hi Eleanor,
As this is quite a recent operation we recommend that you bring this problem up with your consultant who carried out the procedure. We feel at this point, and we are sure your consultant would agree, that you should not be considering liposuction just yet as it may harm the knee replacement as it is quite an aggressive procedure.
If he gives the go ahead to say there is no problem and a letter of agreement then we can offer you a free consultation and take it from there.
I hope this helps.

Hi Diane,
You will see the difference in the areas treated.
Lipo changes your shape, you do not lose weight.

Hi.
I just wish to get some information about liposuction before I call up to make an appointment.
2 years ago this September I had liposuction done to my thighs, lower abdominal area and flanks. Basically I haven’t been happy since I got it done. Even though I’ve dieted and kept to a regular exercise program I just feel like my body hasn’t changed.
My thighs also have a lot of loose skin from when the procedure was done.
I wanted to know if its possible to have liposuction done, even though I have already had it done. Also, is there any way I can get rid of the loose skin on my legs?
How much is the procedure per area?
Many thanks
Nicola Ross
Hi Nicola,
Firstly I feel if you have spent a lot of money on a procedure and you are not happy, you should go back to the surgeon/company who performed the lipoplasty.
On another note, yes you can have liposuction in the same area, as long as the skin has good elasticity.
The loose skin may be a problem, people with great weight loss can have a thigh lift, I imagine you are not in such a bad condition.
Costing for the lipoplasty depends on how many areas, starting at £2.700.
Always ask if we have any promotions.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
I’m considering liposuction on my thighs. I’m a size 8 and weigh 8 stone, i eat well and excersize, but one of my thighs is larger than the other. Can they be evened out?
Thanks
Hi Kate,
Thanks for your question.
If you have fat pads and good elasticity in the skin, then liposuction is a good option.
As you do and have tried all the alternative action that I would have suggested, I feel your next step should be to see a surgeon.
At MYA we offer free consultations, this way you can have expert advice in making an informed decision.

Hi…I am 50 yrs old, type 2 diabetic with arthritic knees and hips, which makes exercise difficult. I don’t eat large amounts, but put weight on very easily and as a result I have a rounded, flabby belly and midrif, and also excess fat on my hips. It would appear to be partly genetic too, as my grandmother and aunt were the same shape. Would I be able to have liposuction, and approximately how much would it cost? Many thanks. Margaret.

I am considering liposuction on my hips, thighs, bottom and stomach.
I have a 3 month old son and was wondering whether its too early to consider the surgery.
Before i was pregnant i was a size 12/14 and since my pregnancy have become a size 18 and am unhappy with the way i look.
How much would it cost to get all 4 pieces of my body done?
Hi Becky,
Prices start from £2,700 and then £600 for each subsequent area.
We would recomend that you try exercise and diet first as Liposuction is mainly for stubborn areas that will not respond to the above.

Hi Mae,
You need to consider diet and exercise before having any specific surgery. If this does not work you may have to consider a surgical procedure such as a gastric banding. Once you have reached your target weight then specific procedures such as lipo or a tummy tuck can be considered. These procedures would not work without the weight loss.

I’ve recently been to another clinic where I had a consultation with the nurse and she told me it only be necessary to remove on the a smal amount of fat on sides (for a better waist definition) and a bit on the lower part.
The reason Im contacting you, is just before I decided in which clinic I would like to have done I do a bit of research on procedures and as well prices.

i am i8 years old, about 5 ft 6 and 1/2 and a size 12-14. my problem is that i have quite a big tummy and a big bottom and thighs, although my tummy is my real problem. i kayak and i feel fat in the changing rooms cos most of the other girls have flat or nearly flat stomachs and i feel that i am an usual shape for my age, particularly because my breasts are a B cup and i feel that i am out of proportion and unattractive. for about five-six months now i have been eating relatively healthily and everyone says i have lost weight but i can see little difference in my problem areas, particularly my stomach. i don’t exercise much and i sometimes binge eat due to stress but overall i eat healthily. i was wondering if i should continue the healthy eating and maybe exercise more and see if there’s any change or having seen no significant improvements these past months is liposuction the only way to get the body i want? i was also wondering if exercising would make any difference, because my dad insists it doesn’t.
Hi Helen,
We would recomend diet and exercise and if that has not helped feel free to come in for a free consultation to discuss other options.

Do you perform mental health checks before and after surgery, is there anything that would prevent you going ahead with the operation?
Hi Claire,
We do a full medical history and take the relevant point into consideration. We also like to speak to your GP.

Hi,
I am 21 and I want to have a complete makeover done to make myself feel better about the way I look. I would like breast enlargemants ( I am a 34DD but would like bigger), liposuction on my stomach and possibly my thighs (I am a size 10 in trousers but think my stomach is a bit flabby) and would like my lips slightly enlarged with a dermal filler. how much will this cost? I am a student, is there any offers or promotions at the moment? Or any offers because I am wanting all the procedures done at once?
Hi Alison,
You would have to come in for a consultation.
The price is reduced if you have the proceedures done at the same time.

Hello, I had a full tummy tuck in March of 06 and bout 3mos. after my procedure I had informed my doctor that I was not quite satisfied with the results he asked me if I had gained weight since the procedure and I did not so then he told me that it was still swollen. He even gave me some diet pills to try and lose weight. I paid this man $8,900 and I feel like all I did was waste my money. I’m stuck back in the same situation that I was in before I got the surgery my friends and family make fun of me all the time and say they can’t believe I wasted all that money. I still weigh the same weight that I did when I went in for the procedure. I am so depressed about my body image now because I am left with a permanent scare and not a flatter tummy. What do I do in this situation?
Hi Shawnee,
We would advise that you go back to the company or surgeon. They should have an aftercare policy.
Sorry I could not be more help.

Hello
When I had my daughter three years ago, I had a c section and am finding that I am numb where they cut me open still three years later. It was an emergency c section and they were not very carefull with how big the slit was so it is hip bone to hip bone. I am finding that I am very unhappy with my body right now after so many surgeries(bilateral mastectomy last year also). Will lipo to my stomach fix the pooch that has developed from cutting me open or will I have to have a tummy tuck as well? and if so what do the two usually cost?
Hi Dawn,

Hi Pat,
We advise you to lose weight as this will get the best result. If further surgery is needed, multiple procedures are cost effective.

Hi, I am 25 with no medical problems and am looking into having lipo on my thighs. No matter how I diet or exercise it seems that I have inherited the family ‘rugby player’ legs and can’t seem to shift them. As this has been a problem for me for years, since my teens, it now seems that this is the best route for me but I really don’t want to get into having to have procedure after procedure. As my legs are on the larger side could lipo then lead to me having saggy skin? also is there any guide prices for this procedure.
Thanks Sarah
Hi Sarah,
Liposuction may help, however genetic factors are difficult to correct.
The best thing to do is to come in for a free consultation.
