Tummy Tuck

The purpose of a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is to remove fat and excess skin from the lower abdomen as well as tightening and repairing the abdominal muscles.

What does the procedure involve?

The surgery is performed under general anesthetic. There are two types of abdominoplasty; a partial or mini tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck.

In a partial tummy tuck an incision is made across the lower abdomen, the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and excess fat is removed. The surgeon will then cut away the excess skin. The remaining skin is then pulled down and stitched together at the line of the first incision.

With a full tummy tuck an incision is made across the lower abdomen from hip bone to hip bone and a second incision is made around the belly button to free it from the abdominal wall. The surgeon then pulls down the muscles and stitches them in place and removes any excess fat and skin. A new hole is created for a belly button and the skin is all stitched together at the first incision.

What are the benefits and what are the risks?

Benefits

Your stomach will be flatter, smoother and tighter and excess ‘baggy’ skin will have been removed. The abdominal muscles will look and feel tighter as they will have been repaired.

Risks

Risks may include poor healing and irregularities, whereby puckering can occur on the edges of the scar. Scarring is permanent, but will reduce and fade with time, and they are usually placed where they cannot be seen in most clothing, including bikinis. In extremely rare cases blood clots may develop so you should start moving around as soon as possible to avoid this.

Is it the right procedure for me?

Many people who opt for a tummy tuck are those who have tried diet and exercise and have been unsuccessful with the results, or those who have significant loose skin due to weight fluctuations or pregnancies. Women who are planning to become pregnant in the future may be advised to wait to have surgery as the muscles which are tightened during the procedure will separate again.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of surgery depends on the extent of the work being done but could take up to three hours, in some cases a couple more.

What happens after surgery?

You will be required to stay in hospital at least overnight, sometimes for a couple of days. You should expect to feel extreme soreness and discomfort which can be alleviated with medication. When you leave hospital the dressing will be removed and you will need to wear an abdominal support garter. You will have to take time off work for a couple of weeks to rest and you will also be advised not to lift anything or participate in any exercise for a month. Bruising is minimal after the operation but swelling may take a couple of months to go down.

How much is it likely to cost?

Like most surgery the cost will reflect the amount of work being done as well as differing between surgeries. However you will be expected to pay in the region of £5,000 and £8,000.

  1. QUESTION:
Ms Helen Stephens on 11.07.2007 at 18:26 (Reply)

Hello. My question regarding a tummy tuck is: I had a caesarian 16 years ago and my baby was over 9lbs. I have a very fatty area (always did) on my lower abdomen with stretch marks, lovely eh! What hope do I have for a nice taught belly and will my muscles cope with being cut again? My scar is hardly visible and very low down so am hoping to be a good candidate for more cutting! Also, I suffer from bloating at times due to food intolerances. Will having tighter skin/muscles qive me a belly ache? Thanks

    1. Sophie on 12.07.2007 at 10:38 (Reply)

Hi Helen. Thanks for your question. It was a bit too complex for me to answer so I have asked Chrissy Davies from MYA Cosmetic Surgery. She is on our pannel of experts and has lots of experience in this area. This is her reply. “First positive thing is you are obviously a good healer. Let me just give you some points regarding your questions. First of all with a tummy tuck you don’t cut through the muscles. A tummy tuck is just to correct the excess skin and fat. Your muscles, which will have been broken from carrying such a big baby, can be corrected at the same time as having the tummy tuck so creating a nice flat tummy. As far as your allergies and bloating are concerned, this is something that would need to be discussed with the surgeon at the consultation.”

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions just let me know.

Hi, I am 28 years old and have two children, which i had by ceaserean section. I had my youngest two and a half years ago. I do not wish to have anymore children and my husband has had a succesful vasectomy.
I have the classic saggy, wrinkley belly which i hate and feel less confident as i used to because of it. I’ve tried lots of sit ups but to no avail. The main question i would like the answer to is, having had two ceasareans already, is it safe to be cut open for the third time and where would the incision be?? Also would i need a full tummy tuck because that one puts me off slightly?!

I look forward to your response. N.Arands

      1. Sophie on 18.10.2007 at 09:54 (Reply)

        Hi Natalie,
A Tummy Tuck takes away excess fat and skin. If the muscles are broken they can also be repeaired. It is not as invasive as a c section. The surgeon will advise if you need a full tummy tuck or not.

Hi, I have recently lost 4 stone in weight and have also had two 10lb babies. My youngest is now 3, and I have no plans for more children. I had a ceasarian with my youngest.

Im still overweight at 13stones (im 5ft 7) but I would easily be a size 14 if it wasnt for my huge disgusting overhanging tummy that is covered in stretch marks. I am happy with my weight its just my belly that is my problem.

Do you have to be below a certain BMI to have a tummy tuck? What would be the likely cost?
      Thank you

      1. Sophie on 21.01.2008 at 17:38 (Reply)

        Hi Sam,
Yes you need to be below a certain BMI. This varies. We would advise that you lose the weight first as this will give you the best result.

  2. QUESTION:
Kelly on 03.08.2007 at 13:48 (Reply)

Hi i would like info on having a tummy tuck, i have lost over 4 sone in weight and did it over 3 years and ex through out, however i have no elasticity in my stomach and when leaning forwards or getting into press up position, my stomach drops down.

I would also consider having a breast surgery as they have also dropped and have lost shape. I would appreciate any feed back.
    thank you
    Kelly

    1. Sophie on 06.08.2007 at 14:54 (Reply)

      Hi Kelly,

You are correct in thinking you need a tummy tuck as this is the only way to get rid of loose skin. A tummy tuck can also achieve tightening of the muscles if the muscles were broken when overweight. A tummy tuck involves an incision form hip to hip but this is always within you panty line and does fade. A tummy tuck would be a 1 or 2 night stay in hospital and 2-3 weeks off work depending on the type of work you do. You would also need to keep away from the gym for 6 weeks.

Regarding breast surgery, depending on what size your breasts are now and what your expectations are, you could be a straight forward breast enlargement or you may need an enlargement with an uplift. This could possibly be done at the same time as the tummy tuck reducing your down time.

Hope this helps! As always, we advise that you have a consultation with one of our surgeons. This consultation is free and they would be able to answer any other questions you may have.

i have had two babies by c-section the last being 5 months ago and i am left with badly stretched baggy skin and a over hang over the scar. how long do i have to wait before considering a tummy tuck as i am a singer and feel really uncomfotable now being on stage in costumes as it is quite noticable

    1. Sophie on 13.08.2007 at 11:47 (Reply)

      Hi Claire,
      Thanks for your question.
If you have decided you have finished having children and you are back to the weight you would like to be then a tummy tuck can achieve fabulous results.
If you have the surgery before you are at your goal weight, then you may develop a small over hang following further weight loss.
At MYA we offer free consultations with experienced surgeons, they will tell you if you need muscle tightening at the same time as the tuck.

  6. QUESTION:
Jo on 09.08.2007 at 20:17 (Reply)

    Hi
I have over the last 4 years lost about 7 1/2 stone and now i have saggy skin on my arms, inner thighs and stomach. Im like a deflated baloon. Im only 23 and feel like i have the body of a 60 year old. I work out all the time and still look fat because of it. I realise that after surgery you need to take up to 6 weeks off from the gym, which I’m dreading. What i wanted to know is whether all of the surgery would be able to be done at one time or whether it would involve 3 seperate sessions of 6 weeks off? I also couldnt take enough time off work to do 3 seperate operations. Also do you know how much it may cost? I know it depends and i will book a consultation when i stop wimping out.

    1. Sophie on 13.08.2007 at 12:08 (Reply)

Firstly Jo, well done, you must feel fantastic.
What you need to remember is if you have lower body surgery then you will need your upper body to help mobilize yourself.
An example: if you have a Tummy Tuck and you are sitting down, then you will need the strength of your arms to push yourself up. This is not possible if you have had an arm lift at the same time.
The incision line for an arm lift is from the inner elbow up to the armpit.
I have seen some great results.
Tummy Tucks start at approx £5,800 going up to over £8,000 depending on the extent of surgery, some body lifts more.
Thigh lifts £5,450 and Arm lifts £4,850.
These prices are approximate and can be combined in cases when procedures can be done together.
Consultations are free at MYA and we do a very competitive finance package.

  7. QUESTION:
    S.D on 13.08.2007 at 14:23 (Reply)

    hi,
over the past year ive lost almost 4 stone. the problem is with my breasts. they seem to have a wrinkle affect on the top of my skin, (as in if i pinch the skin, it doesnt go back to shape) and i dont think my strech marks help either. Although im fairly happy with the size, im a 34G, im considering an uplift, and maybe an uplift with a cup size bigger. How much would it cost, and would it fix the wrinkle affect i seem to have? is there anyway i can have my stretch marks removed aswell?

    1. Sophie on 16.08.2007 at 12:38 (Reply)

      Hi S.D.
An uplift will correct the excess skin, it may reduce the cup size a little.
By using an implant as well, more fullness can be achieved.
The fact you are tightening the skin and filling the breast helps the stretch marks look finer and skin look smoother.
The cost of uplift alone is £5.700(it is reconstruction) the implants cost £3,995.
The procedure done together is £5,900.
Always ask if we have any promotions on.
At MYA we offer free consultations, which help you understand what needs to be done and help you make an informed decision.

    hi,
i have had two children and both by a c section and my belly has got quiet bad saggy skin and depending on what trousers i wear it hangs over them and looks horid im nearly 24 i just wanted to know if you think im to younge for a tummy tuck and if it will do the trick of getting rid of the flabby skin i have??
also i just wanted to know what you would advise i also want my boobs done because they seem like they have gone abit south now so i just really want a bit of advise to see what you think i should really do.

    1. Sophie on 22.08.2007 at 15:08 (Reply)

      Hi Samantha,
If you have decided not to have any more children, then yes it not a matter of your age, but what needs to be done.
A tummy tuck removes all the loose skin and fat from the navel to the pubic area.
Also, at the same time, if needed, any muscles that have been broken from carrying the babies when pregnant can be repaired.
This gives a much flatter stomach.
As for your breasts, it may be a breast enlargement you need or a breast implant and uplift.
At MYA we offer free consultations, only this will tell you what you really need and help you to make an informed decision.
      Hope this helps.

Have you checked with your GP what weight they class as suitable?
The only other option is private with finance.

    Hi,
I’m 29 and have lost around 3 stone in the past year. The loose skin on my belly is horrendous and i’m considering a tummy tuck. I don’t have kids and i’m not in a relationship so don’t plan on having kids in the near future but i wondered if i had a tummy tuck and got pregnant a few years down the line, does this affect my new tummy in the same way as it would before surgery? Would it be easier or harder after surgery to get your figure back?

    Thanks

    1. Sophie on 31.08.2007 at 15:53 (Reply)

      Hi Ellie,
Tummy tuck surgery removes excess fat and skin, once gone it will not return.
If and when you have a baby, there is no guarantee that you skin will not stretch or your abdo muscles will not break.
The benefits out way the ‘if’s’.
You are young and need to be enjoying your body now.
You should feel great you have dropped three stone in weight.
Well done. Feel free to come in for a free consultation. That way you can get all your questions answered face to face. Call on 08000 14 10 14.

You are not a big person. It maybe possible to have both procedures together but you would need to have a consultation so we can examine the area first. Consults are free at MYA, this helps you to make an informed decision.

You would need to slim down to your desired weight and maintain that weight in order to have the most succesfull proceedure. There is no set weight.
Good luck and come in for a free consultation when you have achieved this.

Wow, I hope it is all going well.

I do not see why you should not be eligible for a tummy tuck. I would say that if you want to have more children in the future you would be best off waiting until then.

Elaine on 02.10.2007 at 18:47 (Reply)

Hi, I underwent gastric bypass surgery March 06 and to date have dropped 7.5 stone, I’m a 14/16 around the tummy/hip area at the moment, but most of that is a huge flap of skin and underlying fat which hangs over on my tummy down onto my legs. UGG

I’m 57, 5′1″ tall, have been working with a personal trainer 3 days a week for an hour since a month before the op, so am quite fit and due to the op eat healthy. My sons were born 33 & 31 years ago, I had a hysterectomy at 37.

I’ve also been left with jowells that from side on make me look like I’m in my 70’s not 57. My face has sagged and I look sad. I have also been left with the ubiquitus bat wing arms, inner thighs which look a bit like those net curtains which hang in waves and to cap it all my breasts look like jiffy bags now.

I will need 5 procedures to put all this right and would like all the work done by the time I reach 60 in 2.5 years time.

I’m looking for a full tummy tuck, face/neck and eye lift to be done first.

How long would I need to be in hospital for these ops, can they be done together or a few days apart, what would be the recovery time and lastly what would be the cost involved.

    Thanks

    1. Sophie on 17.10.2007 at 10:48 (Reply)

      HI Elaine,
Yes, you can have multiple proceedures done at the same time. This will save you money and will mean you will be in hospital for less time. The recovery will also be quicker as you will have them all done at the same time. In terms of cost, you wil have to come in for a free consultation where they can go through all this with you.

hi, I’m about to have breast enlargement and if the price is right a tummy tuck as well, what sort of price am i looking at if done together and would the price include discount? (full tummy tuck)

    1. Sophie on 30.10.2007 at 16:42 (Reply)

      Hi Liz,
The 2 are not usually done together.
Only if the surgeon feels the patient would be mobile enough to have a comfortable recovery.
If you have a full tummy tuck, you need the upper body to help getting up and down from a sitting position.
When you have breast enlargement, swelling restricts your upper body movement.
Tummy tuck is two night stay in hospital;£5.800
      BA ;£4.250
If suitable for both= 2 night stay and all aftercare with garments for T/T =£8.500
I hope this helps. Call MYA for a free consultation on 08000 14 10 14.

    Hi

Am 38 years old, have had a hysterectomy and put on about 3 1/2 stone since. Am quite tall but stomach (upper and lower) look like those of a much older matronly woman. I also have a double chin which I hate.

Please could you advise me as to what options are available to me and the likely cost.

    Many thanks.

    1. Sophie on 30.10.2007 at 17:04 (Reply)

      Hi Jane,
It all depends on the elasticity in your skin.
To perform lipoplasty on an area that has been over stretched will only create loose skin.
If you are not happy with your weight, you need to try and drop a couple of stone.
See what areas remain stubborn, then have a consultation with a surgeon.
Lipoplasty should not be used as a quick fix, it would not live up to your expectations.
If you would like a free consultation call MYA on 08000 14 10 14.

It is always desirable to finish having children before having cosmetic surgery. If you had the procedure and then had another child the result may not last and you would have to have it done again.

Sonia on 14.11.2007 at 00:14 (Reply)

Dear Sophie, I am 34 and have had three kids over 10 years, the youngest is now 14 months old. I had three caesarean sections because I am a diabetic and there is a risk of normal delivery. My second section was done wrong and the third surgeon was horrified at the mess of the scars both inside and out. She sorted me out but obviously I still have a lot of excess fat and skin even after the 4+1/2 stone I lost 7 years ago. I am now down to a size 10-12 but I have a small frame and without clothes I still look 5+ months pregnant. I was considered suitable for a tummy tuck three years ago by a different company but I didn’t have the op. I am considering it now but am wondering whether you operate on diabetics because of the increased risk and the extra care needed? Also your answers to other peoples questions regarding price vary: £5k+ in one answer, and £4,500 in others. I would like to know whether you would consider me because of my diabetes, if so then I would book in for a consultation and discuss prices.
    Thanks

Hi I’ve lost just over 9 stone in the past 3 years through diet and exercise. I still have 2.5 stone to lose so feel overweight still and fit a dress size 14/16. I have a great deal of excess skin around my tummy following this weight loss but as I still weight around 13st 7lbs I am worried that I might still be deemed too overweight for tummy tuck surgery. Is this the case? I am in my 40’s and feel very unhappy with my tummy as they show through every item of clothing I put on and really think I need this surgery but will I be considered as a suitable candidate at my present weight?

You need to see a skin specialist. It depends what part of your body the stretch marks are.

  57. QUESTION:
Nicki Isaac on 15.12.2007 at 10:48 (Reply)

    Hi Sophie,
I’ve had 3 children, 1 by c-sec (but I’ve checked your replies to the c-sec queries and I’m satisfied that’s not a problem)
My query is- I weigh in the region of 15st+ and believe it or not, I’m not concerned with my weight as such, I feel I carry it well enough and would be more than happy to stay the way I am.
What I would like to know is, as I am considerably over weight in anyones opinion, would I be a candidate for the Tummy Tuck procedure?
I have in my opinion, the worst baby belly imaginable and it has been a while now since I was able to preform my own Bikini Line procedure :)
I truely don’t expect a models figure, just to be better proportioned.
I am however more than eager to have this surgery done and if losing weight was an issue, for a wonderful result in the tummy area, I would take and carry out any advice given to achieve this.
    Look forward to your reply

      Hi Nicki,
A tummy tuck would be considered in your case but you need to know that the risk of complications is higher than the average.
We do normally advise that you lose weight first but come in for a free consultation to speak about what result you would get in your case.

      For a free consultation call 08000 14 10 14.
