Breast Lift/Uplift

The purpose of having a breast lift or uplift (Mastopexy) is to raise and reshape breasts which may have sagged in appearance due to age, significant loss in weight, or pregnancy.

What does the procedure involve?

Breast lifts are usually performed under general anesthetic, which is the preferred method for most surgeons, although in some cases local anesthetic (twilight surgery) may be used. In this instance the patient is heavily sedated.

There are various types of incisions which may be adopted by a surgeon depending on the extent of the work being done. Such incisions include the crescent shape; (whereby cuts are made in a moon shape above the areola) the T-shape; (cuts are made around the areola then vertically down and under the breast) the doughnut shape; (cuts are made around the areola) and the vertical shape (cuts are made around the areola and down the breast). With each of the above methods excess skin is cut away where the incision is made and the nipple is moved into a higher position. The incision is then stitched up.

What are the benefits and what are the risks?

Benefits

After surgery, breasts will be higher, firmer and more pert. Many women feel more confident and less self-conscious. The results are generally permanent though your breasts may sag again with age or if you put on weight or become pregnant.

Risks

Scarring can occur where the incisions have been made and the extent of scarring will depend on the type of technique adopted. For example the crescent shape incision produces less scarring than the T-shaped incision. As with all types of surgery infection is a possible risk of having a breast reduction, though this can usually be alleviated with antibiotics. If this occurs your scars may become wider, redder and more prominent. Another complication that may arise is a loss of sensation in the nipple area. In some instances women may be left with breasts that appear asymmetrical in appearance.

Is it the right procedure for me?

Many people opt for a breast uplift because their breasts have sagged or drooped and exercise has been unsuccessful in altering their shape.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of surgery can last up to two hours.

What happens after surgery?

You will be required to stay in hospital at least overnight and you will need to take a couple of weeks off work to rest. Physical exercise should be avoided for six weeks. When you go home you will be very sore, bruised and swollen. You will be wrapped with gauze bandage and have a surgical band over this. After approximately one week to fourteen days any stitches will be removed and you will have to wear a supportive, non-underwired bra for several more weeks after which the swelling will have gone down. Any scars may take several months for the pinkness to reduce.

How much is it likely to cost?

Prices can vary between £4,000 and £6,000

If you have one breast larger than the other, is it possible to have surgery to one breast, in order to make it the same size as the other one ?

    1. Sophie on 07.06.2007 at 16:49 (Reply)

Hi Rachel, in response to your question we have asked one of our pannel of experts, Christine Davis from MYA Cosmetic surgery. “Yes but you must be aware that it may feel firmer than your natural breast.” The best thing to do is book a consultation with a cosmetic surgery company. These are normally free and that way you can find out all the information you require.

hi this is rachael im just wondering if you could give me a price for a breast uplift and pinning would i be able to pay on finance the problem with my breasts are that i have had three children and they have started to sag, im breast are currently a size 42E. it will be great if you could get back in touch.

    1. Sophie on 28.08.2007 at 12:15 (Reply)

      Hi Rachael,
Uplift surgery gathers up all the existing breast tissue and takes away the excess skin causing the drop.
The cost of an uplift (mastopexy) is 5,500 pounds without an implant.
      This includes everything.
MYA offer free consultations and we have very good finance packages.
      Hope this helps.

  4. QUESTION:
Gemma on 29.08.2007 at 10:11 (Reply)

    Hi,
I have read quite a bit online about different types of breast uplift procedure, and I have read that a “doughnut mastopexy” can give good results on smaller sagging breasts, with less scarring. Do MYA surgeons ever carry out this type of procedure? - obviously it would depend upon consultation what would be right for each individual patient but having lost a lot of weight and gone down from a 34DD to a 32C/D I think my breasts would probably count as “small & sagging” so I would like to go for the doughnut technique if possible, to reduce scarring.
    Please could you comment?
    Many thanks,
    Gemma

    1. Sophie on 31.08.2007 at 16:17 (Reply)

      Hi Gemma,
Yes, all MYA surgeons do the ‘doughnut’ procedure.
It is not suitable for all cases.
A consultation would give you the information you need, remember it is free.
This will help you make an informed decision.

do you do the ‘donut lift’ ? if not why not? i want to have a breast uplift, but, unfortunately am prone to having kelloid scaring so cannot have scars all around my breast. I do realise that this procedure is much more painful, but, cannot take the risk of severe scarring.

    1. Sophie on 11.10.2007 at 15:55 (Reply)

      Hi Eva,
It should not be a problem. Obviously you would need to come in for a consultation and a full pre op check. I know quite a few people that used to be cabin crew who had breast implants. The only issue they had was getting time off as you will need plenty of recovery time before flying again. The best thing to do is to come in for a consultation. Call 08000 14 10 14. 1. Sophie on 11.10.2007 at 16:04 (Reply)

      Hi Debra,
Doughnut mastopexy (uplift) is meant for women with small breasts and with less sagging. The advantage of doughnut mastopexy
is that it requires fewer incisions and therefore can be seen as less invasive.

In terms of finance, MYA offer a range of competative finance packages. Go to www.mya.co.uk/finance to look or call 08000 14 10 14 to discuss this.

Jueliya on 23.10.2007 at 10:11 (Reply)

    Hello
I had breast augmentation 9 years ago. Unfortunatly the surgery was performed by a surgeon who later went on to have many mal practice claims made against him. One of which was in the national press as the patient was married to a famous footballer.
Any way. My implants have always been very obvious to the touch in that you can even feel the seams. They were never like you see on the TV, mine have always been a bit like a ball in a sock. I have read from your web site that the implants can go under the breast muscle. I would like my breast to be higher than they are and a lot less ‘Wobbly’ Can any thing be done? I am sure that if they are under the muscle they will be firmer and less likely to sag. Please help as i cant bring myself to show anyone

    Hi,

I am 20 years old and have recently had my second child which is 5 months old, i had both children through a c section which has left a saggy pouch.

I am not sure if a mini tuck or a full tummy tuck would be the option and if i should wait as i would like more children later on in life and if i did go a head what could happen if i had another child. Also to have lipo and a breast uplift if needed with implants I am a 34d.
If so how much would this cost.

    Thanks Chantelle

    1. Sophie on 18.12.2007 at 12:01 (Reply)

      Hi Chantelle,
Is always desirable to finish having children before having cosmetic surgery. If you had the procedure and then had another child the result may not last and you would have to have it done again.

Costs would be discussed at the free consultation. As you are having more than one proceedure the price would be reduced.
