Brow Lifts
The purpose of a brow lift (Forehead lifts) is to tighten the skin on the forehead, reducing lines and wrinkles and giving a smoother appearance overall.
What does the procedure involve?
A brow lift can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. There are two main techniques which can be used. An open or coronal brow lift involves the surgeon making a long incision across the forehead around the hairline whereas an endoscopic brow lift involves the surgeon making smaller incisions behind the hairline and then inserting an endoscope (metal tube with a camera attached to it) so that the tissues underneath the skin can be viewed on a television screen. With both techniques the forehead skin is lifted, muscles are cut back and fatty tissue is removed. The skin is then lifted and secured into its new position.
What are the benefits and what are the risks?
Benefits
After surgery the forehead should appear much smoother and deep lines and furrows will be removed. During the procedure the eyebrows are pulled up which creates a more pleasing arch and opens up the eyelid area. In addition, the muscles between the brows which cause deep frown lines may be removed, leaving the patient looking more relaxed.
Risks
You may experience post-operative numbness, but this should be temporary. The most serious but rare complication is the injury which may occur to the nerves that control the brow muscles. If this occurs it may result in the patient being unable to raise their eyebrows or wrinkle their forehead. In some cases the brow lift may leave the patient with asymmetrical eyebrows. Scarring where the incisions were made may occur though these should fade with time. Any scars should be hidden by the hairline but may show in later years if the hairline recedes.
Is it the right procedure for me?
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and becomes saggier in appearance resulting in a tired, older looking face. A brow lift will tighten the skin on the forehead leaving it smoother and more youthful looking. You may want to talk to your surgeon about alternative cosmetic procedures if you are unsure if a brow lift is the right type of procedure for you.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure can take between one and three hours.
What happens after surgery?
You will be required to stay overnight in hospital and will need to take up to two weeks from work to recover. For the first week after surgery you will be required to sleep in an upright position to reduce swelling. Swelling and bruising is to be expected for a couple of weeks after surgery which may also affect the eye and cheek area. Stitches will be removed within a week after the operation. You will be asked to refrain from facials, steam baths and saunas for several weeks and use a mild shampoo to avoid irritation.
How much is it likely to cost?
Prices range from between £2,500 and £5,000
