Nose re-shaping

The purpose of rhinoplasty (nose re-shaping) is to reshape the nose to give a more desirable shape or to relieve blockages in the nostrils.

What does the procedure involve?

The surgery can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic depending on the extent and type of work to be carried out. There are a number of procedures that can be used by surgeons to reshape the nose so the method and technique used will depend on the result you will want to achieve.

Open and closed surgery can be performed on the nose. Open nose operations involve the surgeon making cuts outside the nose whereas closed surgery involves cuts being made inside the nose.

During surgery an incision is made in or around the nose to separate the soft tissue that lies on top of the nose from the bone and cartilage underneath. The surgeon will then break the nose bone and reposition it or reshape the cartilage. If the nose needs building up, then cartilage from other parts of the body such as the ear, rib or different part of the nose are grafted and used.

What are the benefits and what are the risks?

Benefits

If rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic reasons then a more pleasing shape should be acquired. However it is worth noting that the surgeon can only work with what you already have, in terms of bone and cartilage structure, which may limit the extent to which you can alter the shape of your nose.

If surgery is undertaken for functional reasons such as the removal of obstructions, then your breathing should be improved.

Risks

Nasal Bleeding is common after surgery but is not usually deemed to be a risk, and infections are rare. The main problem is that some people are not totally happy with their new nose, as the “perfect” shape is not always achievable. Some irregularities with the shape however do subside over time and it may take up to a year for the final shape to “emerge”. As a result secondary surgery should not be considered until after this time.

Is it the right procedure for me?

It is recommended that girls wait until they are at least 14 years old and boys 16 years old until they have rhinoplasty, as the nose may not be fully developed until they reach this age and it may therefore change shape slightly. Most people who undergo rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes usually do so because they feel that their nose is too large for their face; the nose is crooked; they have a bump on the nasal bridge; or nostrils are excessively flared.

Certain procedures may also interfere with your breathing, so this will become a consideration when deciding whether to go ahead with surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

Surgery takes approximately two hours depending on the extent of the work.

What happens after surgery?

After surgery a splint is generally applied to the nose, for about week, whilst the bones “set”. The nose will be packed with medicated gauze which may be removed after a couple of days and you will be shown how to change these should you experience bleeding. Any internal stitches will not need to be removed as they are self absorbing. You will experience some discomfort for several weeks following surgery, including swelling, bruising and stuffiness. You may even have black eyes if the nasal bones are fractured. You may have to take up to two weeks from work and any sports or activities that may risk injury to the nose will have to be avoided for a couple of months.

How much is it likely to cost?

Prices may vary between £4,000 and £6,000

my nose has been reshaped 6 times is it possible to be done again

    1. Sophie on 07.06.2007 at 16:42 (Reply)

We have asked one of our pannel of experts, Chrissy from MYA Cosmetic Surgery. “After 6 attempts I would be very cautious. The more surgery you have, the more scar tissue develops. Sometimes the expectations that we have cannot be met and maybe you will have to re assess the situation. My advice would be to go back to your original surgeon, speak to him and listen to what he has to say.”

I am very interested in have rhinoplasty - please can you advise if there are any surgeons who specialise in this operation in or near Cornwall.
Also, would you advise against going abroad for this procedure?
    Thanks

    1. Sophie on 08.06.2007 at 17:05 (Reply)

      Hi Tracey,
Our experts would advise that you go on to the BAAPS/BAPS website and search for a plastic surgeon within that area. Always ask the important question “How many Rhinoplasty’s how you performed?”

Regarding going abroad they would advise against this as surgery does not end when you leave the hospital. There should be follow up care for at least 1 to 3 years. Hope this helps!

    1. Sophie on 22.08.2007 at 12:39 (Reply)

      Hi Josh
Thank you for contacting MYA Cosmetic Surgery.
The procedure you are enquiring about is called Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping).
This is a simple procedure, which is done with a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital.
You would need approximately ten days away from work and 4-6 weeks away from the gym.
At MYA we offer free consultations, with a very experienced cosmetic surgeon, only this way can we give you the correct information and see if your expectations can be achieved.
The full costing is £3,950, which includes all hospital, surgeon, anaesthetist and 3 years aftercare fees.
We also offer competitive rates if you are considering finance.
Call on 08000 141014 to make that first step and meet a member of the MYA team at a clinic closest to you.

I’m a medical student and i wish to get my nose reshaped.
My nose is not oversized but the bridge starting near the eyes is too short and my nose tip is not sharp.
Is it possible for me to reshape my nose the way i want?

      Hi Lyd,
Only a surgeon can tell you what can be achieved.
Is very easy to know what you would like, but in reality there are limitations.
The cost of nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) is £3,950, this includes all the surgeon, hospital, anaesthetist and 3 years aftercare fees.
You must stay in the UK for 6 weeks post operative.

My problem is that I am only dissatisfied with a very small area of my nose - the tip.
When I smile, the tip of my nose goes a long way down, and almost meets my top lip!! I am very concious of it on photos, even though it’s something very small.
If I could “sandpaper” the nose tip in an upward motion that would solve it in 5 mins!!!
Is there an op to get something as minor as this done? If so what is the cost, and how long will it take/ what’s involved etc…

    Hi
Im thinking of having my nose slightly reshaped. From the front it looks fab but from the side has a slight bump, this I would like to correct. I also would like breast enlargements. I am a 32B but wouls like to go up to C or D cup. Is it possible to have them done at the same time? I don’t want to have to take too much time off work. Do you have any special deals/prices for a 2 in 1 opp!? How soon would I be able to have this surgery done? Would I have to travel far to have this surgery done?

One last question? How soon after surgery would I be able to try for a baby? Is it possible to breast feed a baby after implants?

    1. Sophie on 29.08.2007 at 10:44 (Reply)

      Hi Mia,
Yes it is possible to have both procedures done at the same time. By doing this you would save money. You could easily go to a C or D cup size. Most women can easily go up 2 cup sizes without a problem. In terms of travelling, we use hospitals in London, Manchester and Doncaster and are planning to expand on this very soon. Breast feeding is safe after having breast implants however you will need to discuss some more detail at a consultation. MYA offers a free initial consultation and also a free consultation with a surgeon.
      Hope this helps!

At your consultation our MYA surgeon will be able to help you make an informed decision.

Depending on the size of the tip would determine the refinement.
The correction maybe done internally or with a tiny incision near the nostril.

When the surgeon during the second operation tried to file down the lump, he cut the skin so I also had scarring. It has now all healed up and two years on I would like to look at having the straight nose I have always wanted. Do you have an expert in nose re-shaping in your clinic? jon simon on 23.09.2007 at 16:17 (Reply)

Hi I’m very interested in getting rhinoplasty done on my nose but the only problem is that I don’t being under general anaesthetic, and that’s what is putting me off having the surgery done on me. However I was researching the rhinoplasty procedure and I noticed that most of the plastic surgery websites said that a local anaesthetic can be done, on some rhinpoplasty procedures if the patient is only getting the tip of his nose done, but I want my whole nose corrected and a bump to be taken out of my nose. So I was just wondering if this could be done by local anaesthetic and if being under general anaesthetic can be avoided? As I would probably get the rhinoplasty surgery if I could have it done that way.

    Thank you!

    1. Sophie on 25.09.2007 at 16:12 (Reply)

      Hi Jon,
We do not encourage this as it can be stressfull and very uncomfortable for you. You would need to have a consultation with a surgeon. Anaesthesia is very safe today. It is simply like going to sleep with a specialist keeping an eye on you!

At MYA this is consultation is free. Call 08000 14 10 14 to book in.

  31. QUESTION:
Teresa on 19.10.2007 at 09:31 (Reply)

    Hello

I would like to know if you have surgeons who specialise in Nose tip skin grafting.

After having a previous three nose jobs due to my tip collapsing my surgeon has now suggested a skin graft to combat this problem for good. The only problem is that my surgeon has not performed this operation before as he says its highly unusual.

Do you have a surgeon at your practice that has performed this surgery before?

    1. Sophie on 26.10.2007 at 16:05 (Reply)

      Hi Teresa,

Our advice would be to get in touch with a reconstructive surgeon.
Your GP should be able to help you with this.

Please could u give me a second opinion.

  43. QUESTION:
shirley on 03.12.2007 at 21:52 (Reply)

    Hello
I am 43 and had septorhinoplasty 12 months ago. Although my nose looks better than before, the result is not good enough. The nose is still larger than I hoped for, and is uneven from the bridge to the tip (middle part of the cartilage is slighly rasised and the tip is kind of ‘pinched’). Is my only option a revision rhinoplasty? Are there any other procedures to lessen these undesirable effects?

    1. Sophie on 22.01.2008 at 11:00 (Reply)

      Hi Shirley,

We would advise that you go back and speak to your original surgeon.

Sorry I could not be more help.

  44. QUESTION:
Gareth on 06.12.2007 at 00:48 (Reply)

I have had a broken nose since i was 16, i’m now 27. The septum is to the side so i look hook nosed, some days if i push my nose to the side it almost looks straight but it dont last, the shape returns. Is it expensive to have it straightened? and if it is out of my reach, is it safe to have my nose punched to have it straightened at hospital. Its important to me, i feel very uneasy around people lookin me in the face during conversations

  45. QUESTION:
Lucy on 06.12.2007 at 03:38 (Reply)

I have just turned 18 and have been unhappy with my nose since my early teens. I have quite a small nose but it has a large bump on the bridge. I am worried about the risks of having such a serious operation, but I made the decision a long time ago that this is what I wanted to do as soon as I was old enough as I feel it will boost my confidence.
    My questions are;
How much scarring will there be?
How long will it take before you can go outside and do average day to day things?
How long will the facial bruising/swelling last?

    Thank you!

    1. Sophie on 22.01.2008 at 13:33 (Reply)

      Hi Lucy,
There is not normally visible scarring as most of the work is done inside the nose. Rest for 1 to 2 weeks and swelling and brusing differs for each person.

Kevin on 11.12.2007 at 08:50 (Reply)

Hi i was thinking of having my nose re-shaped as i have a bump and i would like my nose straight but i think instead of the bump being shaved down it would look better if it was built up from the top of the nose to the bump to make it look straight, i was just wondering if there is a procedure to build the nose up in this way and also how much approx would it cost?, thank you for your time.
