The Purpose
The purpose of a buttock implant (gluteoplasty/gluteal augmentation) is to make the shape of the buttocks more defined.
What does the procedure involve?
Buttock implants are usually made of silicone. Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision between the buttock cheeks and a space is made behind the upper buttock muscle, where the implant is placed. The incision is then stitched.
What are the benefits and what are the risks?
Benefits
The main benefit is that through surgery, buttocks appear rounder and more curvaceous, which diet and exercise cannot achieve. Implants vary in size so you can achieve the look you are after.
Risks
As this part of the body is used for so many activities, such as walking and sitting, it is probably one of the most painful procedures during the recovery period, compared to other cosmetic surgery. Risks can include infection, bleeding and collection of fluid which are risks associated with most surgery. As incisions are made, scarring can occur and the scar is located between the buttock cheeks. Scars however do fade with time but the severity of the scar will depend on the individual. In some cases the implant may move or even rupture which may mean it has to be removed, which is not a straightforward procedure.
Is it the right procedure for me?
The main reason for choosing to have buttock implants is that the buttocks may appear small in size or saggy and implants will make them more round and shapely in appearance. However, in some cases it is other parts of the body that give the buttocks this appearance, such as the legs or waist, so it is necessary to talk to your doctor or surgeon to identify whether implants are the right procedure to achieve the look you are after.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes between one and two hours depending on the size of the implant and the complexity of the procedure.
What happens after surgery?
After surgery you will need to stay in hospital for at least one night and be required to lie face down for 48 hours. When leaving hospital your buttocks will have dressing on them and you will be required to wear a corset. As the dressing needs to remain dry, you will not be able to shower or bathe the area for between 7 and 10 days. Depending on the individual you may also need to take a week off work to rest and should refrain from any exercise for six weeks. Final results are seen after approximately 3 months, when all swelling and bruising has gone down.
How much is it likely to cost?
This is a relatively new procedure to the UK and prices will vary.
