Rhinoplasty @ MYA London with Mr Gonschior
by Andrew Capocci
Hello everyone, I wanted to have nose reshaping for a long time now. I decided to go with MYA because of their fantastic reputation and stories I had heard. When I did research on forums here i couldn’t find any advice from people who had rhinoplasty first hand - especially male surgery too, although many of you girls helped by comforting me about the anaesthetic, so I wanted to write something here to reassure anyone about nose surgery, or just the surgery process as a whole. I was admitted at the Highgate hospital, and I was surprisingly calm as everything there looks modern and rather like a hotel really! I also had a friend with me who helped to keep me focused. The nurses there were great in getting me prepared and were happy and bubbly which also helped with nerves. When it was time to go to theater I was nervous because I had never been knocked out before. The nurses who took me down were wonderful, they could see I was scared and were great at getting my attention changed! The anaethesist was really kind and funny and before i knew it I was asleep. It was weird because I remember being put to sleep then next minute I woke up! all done! I was really worried about the anaesthetic because I couldn’t understand how it worked, everyone told me you just go to sleep. Having had it done I realize that you do just fade into a sleep. The technology in medical science is brilliant these days! My throat was a bit sore when I came round and my lips and mouth were dry because I had to breathe through my mouth but that was probably the worst bit! I was off my nut chatting rubbish for a bit but that soon wore off. I was back in my room ready to recover with my friend who helped me get water etc. I would say that although you feel fine immediately, it is important to rest and sip water for a bit as this helps you to not feel sick. Also try to eat as soon as possible as that balances you back in the real world. It was great having my friend there because I was a bit spaced out so you might want to bring someone to help you get water and stuff. However the nurses Thula and Christine, who looked after me were charming, sweet, and so so kind. I felt bad asking them for things because they looked after me like a celebrity! Anything you needed or wanted seemed like a breeze to them. I am so thankful for their wonderful care. I have to say all the staff at the Highgate are wonderful, everyone smiles and says hi to you. My surgeon, Mr Gonschior came to check on me before the op to explain again and discuss what I wanted, he was great at letting me explain one final time and I felt like he had empathized with what I wanted really well as he has been so careful to listen to me since my first consultation. When I came back round he immediately came to check on me and he reassured me everything was fine, but I knew that anyway because I was lucky enough to have a gut feeling that I wanted him to do my surgery from the start! I really trusted him 100 percent and he did not let me down. If anyone is thinking of surgery with him, I say based on my experience go for it! He is so nice, lets you explain things properly, understands you, and he executed my surgery with finesse and detail. Nothing about my dressing or bruising was messy! He even came again in the morning before I left to say bye and check on me. What a star. When I came home to recover I was quite lucky as my bruising and major swelling had settled really fast. I could not believe that there is no pain whatsoever! I experienced some pressure type of pain on my face but it was very mild, and you are supplied with medication and antibiotics to control pain and help you heal. It felt like it had been such an easy ride, I couldn't wait to see the results! My consultant at MYA Nadja Collin has been wonderful too, checking on me day to day and she answered all my concerns wonderfully from pre to post op! there is always someone to help if you need it, but I found it is important to have friends and family to support you, because the messages and phone calls help you keep your mind off it and focused on the future. After about a week I experienced a nose bleed so I called the emergency line, and the nurse was great she told me how to stem the bleeding fast. it wasn’t serious and it was simply because I had made myself hot! sitting by the fire playing computer games all day didn’t help. Try to stay active although keep it low key, I went for slow walks, and to the shops but in general I didn’t want to go out too much even though the cast is small and tidy I wanted to hide away. When I returned to MYA clinic to have the cast off I was so nervous! When it came off I didn’t want to look and it took me a while to look at my nose properly. When I finally did I wasn’t disappointed at all! Mr Gonchior did a fantastic job on me, and every day I can see it changing for the better. I expect that over the next year it will look better and better. My reaction from friends etc was good because they thought I would go for the 'Hollywood nose' and were surprised by how natural it looked. they all asked for my surgeon!!! The physiological journey is more tough than the actual surgery as changing your nose can be a big change depending on what you have done. I am recognizing my face now and no longer hide from mirrors because it looks great, I think I was in a little shock for a while but I expect this to be quite a natural response. People always ask me to say what the most negative point about having it done is. To say a bad thing about MYA would be unfair because I received great surgery and great service. Mr Gonschior and Nadja Collin really were fantastic and a credit to the MYA company and future patients. The most negative thing for me was probably the state of shock I experienced, but everyone is different and react in different ways. I’m over it now and I am so glad I had it done. It was the best thing ever, and I wish I had it done when I was younger because all these years I endured my old nose and hated it when in fact a simple procedure can alter that. I hope people find this useful and help them to make themselves amazing! x
