News Image Men with gynecomastia have been advised that the breast reduction procedure has got much better over the last few years.

Merle Yost, a psychotherapist and author, had breast reduction surgery in 1994 at the age of 33, reports the St Petersburg Times.

Although he personally was not satisfied with the outcome, he said people who undergo the procedure today could find themselves much happier.

"The procedure has improved," he commented.

"There have been advances."

For example, Mr Yost said different liposuction methods are now being used by clinicians, while patients are far less likely to experience scarring than in the past.

He added that gynecomastia can often develop because of liver-related problems, such as hepatitis or alcohol dependency.

This comes after research commissioned by the UK Department of Health found that many British males are concerned that drinking too much could affect their appearance.

Nearly one in five expressed concern that excessive alcohol consumption could lead to them developing "man boobs".
