Pop singer Cher – who shot to fame in the 1960s – has revealed that she has spent a small fortune on plastic surgery.

The artist, who has previously described herself as a "poster girl" for cosmetic surgery, said that the procedures were necessary for her career, the Daily Mail reports.

She told the newspaper that in her career as an entertainer, "becoming old and becoming extinct are one and the same thing".

Cher, 61, has had a facelift, breast augmentation and work on her teeth in a bid to stay looking youthful.

She had hits in the 60s with songs such as I Got You Babe, but recorded some of her best sales in the late 1990s.

Her 1998 album Believe won a Grammy award and sold 20 million copies worldwide, according to Rolling Stone.

Former husband Sonny Bono, whom she partnered in the pop duo Sonny & Cher, died in the same year that Believe was released.
