The trend for pectoral muscle implants is growing, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The newspaper cites figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons which showed a 99 per cent increase in the procedure between 2005 and 2006.

A San Francisco massage therapist who treated himself to the surgery as a 40th birthday present, said: "It’s such a confidence booster. I walk a little taller now. And of course you want to buy every tight white t-shirt. It’s crazy!"

Some people purchase cars or property, he added, but he desired defined chest muscles.

He told the newspaper that nobody has ever guessed his macho-chest is due to surgery rather than the gym, not even anyone he has slept with.

Explaining the trend, Anthony Durante, a personal trainer, claimed that the chest is usually the main area of concern for men, adding that many want to appear warrior-like.

The Independent reports that there has been a 30 per cent increase in male Botox patients.ADNFCR-1234-ID-18434469-ADNFCR
