Breast Implants
MYA use high quality cohesive silicone gel breast implants manufactured by Allergan, one of the world leaders in innovative breast aesthetics, who have the highest implant safety record. They are very tough and resistant and rupture is extremely uncommon. It would take a big trauma to puncture an implant. If for any reason it was to happen there is nothing dangerous that can happen as the gel couldn't leak or be absorbed into the body - it would stay within the breast pocket.
Implants are measured in weight (cc's or grams). They do not come in specific cup sizes. The same size implant in two different people may result in differing final cup sizes as they may have different amounts of breast tissue to start with. A surgeon will never guarantee a cup size to a patient as this is not always accurate. The surgeon's aim is to choose an implant that is going to put a patient's body in proportion whilst taking them as close as possible to their desired size. The decision is usually made on the basis of a patient's personal preference in conjunction with the surgeon's advice following the examination of the breast tissue.
Under or Over the Muscle
Once the incision has been made the surgeon will create a pocket to fit the implant. This can be positioned in one of two places.
In front of the pectoral muscle (sub-mammary/over the muscle). This is normally performed when there is excessive skin that needs to be filled, i.e. after breast- feeding when the bulk of the fat content has disappeared and the breast is like an empty sack. Behind the pectoral muscle (sub-pectoral/under the muscle). This is normally preferred if there is no excess skin to fill and the surgeon can use the muscle to hold the implant in place. It also provides a pad of tissue in front of the implant.
During your consultation the surgeon will take the necessary measurements and advise what would give the best result.
Asymmetrical Breasts
Asymmetrical Breasts is a condition where one breast is noticeably a different size than the other. All breasts are asymmetrical to some degree however the term Asymmetrical Breasts most commonly refers to breasts that differ in size by at least one cup size. The difference in size may start to become noticeable during puberty as this is when the breast tissue starts to develop. The asymmetry may become more obvious as the years move on. It is not usually linked to any medical condition but it can be a cause for concern for women with regards to body image and self-esteem. Asymmetrical breasts can be easily corrected using breast enlargement surgery. If a patient has a significant difference in breast sizes, it is possible for the surgeon to use different implant sizes to create a more symmetrical look.
Tubular Breasts
Tubular breasts, also referred to as tuberous breasts, is a another breast shape condition that has many variation. Tubular breasts often have a very narrow base meaning the breast appears more like a tube. They also have abnormally large nipples or areola as the breast tissue has been squeezed into the tip of the breast and it is quite common for tuberous breasts to sit far apart, leaving an unnaturally wide cleavage. One breast will usually be smaller in size and regardless of a woman's age, both tubular breasts sag due to the shape, lack of tissue and the fact that the inframammary fold, where the base of the breast meets the chest wall, is usually too high causing the breast to droop.
Breast implants can be used to correct the shape and it is often necessary to use two different size implants so the breast are symmetrical. Breast implants come in various different sizes and shapes so the surgeon will recommend what will be best depending on your current breast shape and the look you want to achieve. In some cases the nipples may need to be reduced however this can be discussed with the surgeon in more detail.
