One in five people in the world would have cosmetic surgery if they had the money, it has been revealed.
A global poll, conducted by Synovate, found that this figure rose to 60 per cent in Brazil, showing that cosmetic surgery is most popular in the south American nation.
In every country, women were more likely to seek a nip and tuck, with an average of 25 per cent claiming they would have surgery, compared to 12 per cent of men.
However, when questioned on what beauty means to them, 35 per cent of respondents said beauty is what is on the inside. A further 32 per cent claimed that it is to do with an individual''s confidence.
"Humans are complex," commented the firm''s senior vice-president Virginia Weil. "Some of us are quite open about wishing we were beautiful, others feel they already are, and many dismiss beauty as an ''on-the-surface'' issue."
In the UK, cosmetic surgery procedures rose by 12.2 per cent last year, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
