"Dramatic" results demanded by patients
20/12/2007
Although minimally-invasive procedures can offer a slight enhancement to an individual''s appearance, people are seeking more dramatic results from cosmetic surgery, it has been claimed.
Jeffrey Spiegel, MD, chief of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Centre has stated that 2008 will see a number of significant changes in the industry.
"With the economy slowing down somewhat, the desire to look your best will remain but people will expect to get what they paid for and be less tolerant of only minor improvement with a big cost," he said.
Another anticipated change is an increasing awareness by surgeons of exactly what patients are aiming to achieve.
Dr Spiegel claimed that research into how the brain defines and rates attractiveness will lead to improvements in cosmetic surgery as doctors realise which features have the most influence over an individuals appearance.
A recent study by market analyst firm Mintel found that during 2007, there were 1,600 cosmetic surgery operations a day in the UK.
