Breast implants are safe, reveals new study
29/10/2007
The latest review into the health effects of silicone breast implants has found there is no increased risk of cancer, connective tissue diseases or other chronic diseases, reports Newswise.
The study, published in November''s issue of Annals of Plastic Surgery claims the results have been "remarkably consistent" in proving there is no link between breast enlargement and cancer.
The study is the first update since a report by the Institute of Medicine in 1999.
"Since then, research on the safety and performance of these devices has continued, especially as new device designs
were being marketed and tested," the researchers write.
The report also reveals that there is no connection between children born with birth defects and mothers with breast implants.
A survey by Abbey revealed that 27 per cent of people planning to have cosmetic surgery want a breast augmentation operation, making it the most popular procedure.
