Cheeks "vital" to beauty

28/05/2008

The cosmetic surgery industry has had a "breakthrough" in its understanding of how to treat facial ageing, it has been claimed.

According to a study in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons'' (ASPS'') journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a fat compartment in the cheek is vital to a young-looking face.

By injecting this compartment with fat, tissue fillers or an implant, not only does the cheek look more youthful, but the eyes, nose and mouth areas all appear invigorated, it claimed.

ASPS member and co-author of the report Joel Pessa: "From the irresistible urge to pinch the cheeks of adorable infants to our admiration of Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn and Angelina Jolie, we''ve known for a long time that cheeks are vital to what we consider beautiful."

He added that although adding volume to the face is nothing new to the cosmetic surgery world, this new study has revealed that restoring cheek fat can drastically affect many other areas.

The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery claims that Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett and Renee Zellweger have the most-desired female cheeks.
