Cosmetic surgery going "beyond the silver screen"

29/02/2008

Cosmetic surgery has been fully embraced by celebrity culture, it has been claimed.

In a Smith College Sophian column, journalist Alexandra Bergman explained that in the glamorous industry of showbiz, females are judged on their looks over their talent and personalities.

Ms Bergman claimed that cosmetic surgery is not a new phenomenon in Hollywood culture, citing Marilyn Monroe''s reported chin and nose surgery as a perfect example of how leading ladies "have never been 100 per cent natural".

According to the journalist, cosmetic surgery is all part of fame and fortune but that in the age of saturated media, "women beyond the silver screen are joining in".

She added: "If women feel the need to spruce themselves up, either under pressure or elective confidence, why accuse them? Furthermore, why discourage it?"

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Raj Kanodia, who has performed nose jobs on Ashlee Simpson, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston, claims that 60 per cent of Hollywood women have undergone some form of cosmetic enhancement, reported by US Weekly.
