Cosmetic surgery 'is for the individual'

15/02/2008

Choosing whether to undergo cosmetic surgery is for the individual and decisions should not been made when under pressure from somebody else, one expert has said.

According to the Daily Mirror''s relationship therapist Flic Everett, people should never have an operation to please someone else.

"I firmly believe that you should only ever have cosmetic surgery after thinking long and hard about why you want it, and what you expect it to change," she wrote in her column.

She added: "While security has to come from within, it certainly helps if your partner''s loving and supportive. If he isn''t, ask yourself if you really need him in your life?"

Individuals who do decide to have a cosmetic procedure such as a boob job are encouraged to think about what they would change about their life and behaviour if they had the surgery.

The top procedure for women is breast augmentation, with 6,497 carried out last year, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
