Cosmetic surgery 'not a definite sign of cheating'

26/06/2008

People often jump to conclusions when their partner has cosmetic surgery and believe infidelity is the reason, it has been claimed.

Research by law firm Pannone found that many divorce cases arise as a result of a spouse choosing to have a breast enlargement or a nose job.

However, it warned that the individual may not be improving their looks for another lover, but could have been influenced by fashion or celebrities.

"Broader social and business horizons, activities and technologies which may once have seemed fairly exotic are now frequent parts of the many divorces we handle," said partner at the firm Andrew Newbury.

"It''s important for couples to realise, however, that they represent how society and tastes are changing."

A new hobby, new group of friends or a new nose is not an automatic link to extra-marital relations, he added.

Research by Abbey Loans found that Brits have taken out £1.35 million worth of unsecured personal loans in secret from friends and family, two per cent of which were to fund cosmetic surgery.
