Cosmetic surgery operations double in 2yrs

19/12/2007

The popularity of cosmetic surgery is increasing, with 1,600 procedures performed daily in the UK during 2007, a new survey has found.

Research by Mintel revealed that 577,000 cosmetic surgery operations and treatments were carried out this year, making the industry now worth £900 million. This compares to 300,000 operations in 2005 and a value of £430 million.

The survey also found that 44 per cent of Brits would consider having surgery, with 60 per cent of these citing the reason as self-consciousness.

"For many the natural look simply can''t compete and leaves them feeling inadequate," commented Alexandra Richmond, senior cosmetics analyst for Mintel.

"This, along with a love of all things anti-ageing is driving Brits towards cosmetic procedures," she added.

Consumer advice firm Looking Good BuyAssociation recently announced that the most marked change in the cosmetic surgery industry was the growing number of male patients.
