Male cosmetic surgery becoming "more socially acceptable"

09/04/2008

The increase in male cosmetic surgery is sure to continue, it has been stated.

During 2007, the number of male liposuction operations grew by 18 per cent, making it the second most popular procedure among men.

Male breast reduction also increased by 27 per cent, with 224 procedures taking place last year, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Overall, cosmetic surgery among men grew by 17.5 per cent, reaching a total of 2,881 operations performed.

Felicity Quigley, editor of consumer advice organisation Looking Good BuyAssociation, claimed that the growing social acceptance and accessibility of cosmetic surgery means demand for it can only rise.

"I think it is becoming more socially acceptable and it follows that men are certainly going to be going for things like hair replacement, anti-ageing treatment, things like that," she said.

Ms Quigley attributed the rising popularity of cosmetic surgery to recent media exposure.
