Procedures 'now safer than ever'

Cosmetic surgery procedures are undergoing constant improvements and are the safest they have ever been, a study has concluded.

A report released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Asaps) states that over 11 million procedures were undertaken in the US last year.

And these have been characterised by a demand from surgeons for the latest and most reliable equipment, a spokesman for the body said.

Richard Burgoon, an executive from an equipment manufacturer, says that industry statistics show that "the number of plastic surgeons eager to obtain instrumentation that fit their medical needs" is increasing.

Newer and better equipment serves to "improve procedural outcome, decrease post-trauma effect and, at the same time, reduce liability concerns", he added.

According to Asaps, one of the more popular procedures last year was to have fat deposits transferred from one part of the body to another.
