Sagging skin 'common problem for new mothers'

24/04/2008

Even women who only put on the minimum amount of weight when they are pregnant are left with some sagging skin after giving birth, it has been claimed.

Speaking to local Shenectady newspaper the Daily Gazette, cosmetic surgeon Dr Patricia Fox explained that many women are extremely health-conscious these days and are therefore only putting on around 20 to 30 pounds while pregnant.

However, some still complain of sagging skin around the stomach depending on their skin type, she said.

"I tell my patients we don''t get to pick what kind of fabric we are made of," Dr Fox stated. "It''s like when you blow up a balloon - it''s tight. But you blow it up once or twice, let the air out and it never goes back to the same size."

Dr Fox advises a "mommy makeover" for women who want to correct this problem, adding that this is a tummy tuck, often combined with breast augmentation or liposuction.

The Daily Telegraph recently reported that there is an increasing trend in the UK of women seeking cosmetic surgery after giving birth, seeking to rectify their sagging breasts and tummies.
