Silicone implants "safe and effective"
29/11/2007
Following research into silicone breast implants, one surgeon claims they are the most effective way to achieve a bigger bust.
Dr Eleanor Barone, MD, an aesthetic plastic surgeon at Advanced Dermatology and the Centre for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in NY and Long Island, said that silicone has been proven to have absolutely no risk of any serious disease.
She claimed that both saline and silicone have benefits but in general, it''s the silicone material which makes implants appear more natural-looking and feel similar to a real breast.
"All breast implants are made from a solid silicone rubber shell that''s filled with either saline solution (sterile salt water) or elastic silicone gel," she said.
Dr Barone cites American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery''s figures which claim there were around 384,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in the US last year, making it the top procedure for women.
A survey by high street bank Abbey found that 27 per cent of people planning on having cosmetic surgery were opting for breast implants.
