Young women use Botox as a "preventative measure"

26/02/2008

An increasing number of women in their 20s are opting for Botox injections, it has emerged.

The report, by BBC Radio 1''s Newsbeat and 1Xtra, revealed that at some of the major UK cosmetic surgery clinics, a quarter of patients are aged 30 or under, a 100 per cent increase over the past three years.

"When I looked at my mum she''s got a really strong frown line, so I went and had it done," 23-year-old Abigail Willmitt told the station. "It''s just a preventative measure."

Other Botox patients claimed the injections, which prevent wrinkles and lines, are similar to using face creams, having facials or other treatments.

Dr Nick Lowe, a London-based surgeon, explained that the treatments are harmless for young women as long as they are administered by a professional.

The report warns young women that beauty clinics on the high street are not fully trained to carry out Botox injections.

Last week, Ugly Betty villainess Vanessa Williams told US OK! magazine that she regularly has Botox, nicknaming it a "miracle drug".
