Gynecomastia is the procedure for male chest reduction. Although this is a subject that men rarely talk about it is quite a common condition.
During puberty most teenage boys will develop fatty tissue
around the chest or breast area which for about 90% usually
subsides naturally within a year or so. For the remaining 10% of
men it can remain with them for the rest of their adult lives. The
severity of the condition varies with each individual.
The cause is not known but has been linked to hormonal imbalances,
weight gain and can be a side effect from taking specific
medication. For many men the most simple and effective way of
correcting this is using liposuction which removes the pockets of
fat that have developed in the chest area.
At MYA liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic.
Through a small incision a hollow metal tube known as a cannula,
breaks up the fat beneath the skin. It is then removed by a syringe
or vacuum pump. Ultrasound waves or an injection of fluid can also
break up the fat. Depending on the extent of the fatty tissue, the
surgeon may want to remove any excess breast tissue. This can be
done at the same time as liposuction however the surgeon will need
to make a small incision around the lower nipple.
Any surgery is a big decision and MYA will provide all of the details you will need to make an informed choice. Liposuction to remove fat from this area is very effective and scarring is minimal.
Approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the technique and the extent of the surgery.
You will need a few days off work to recover and no exercise for a couple of weeks. You will need to wear a liposuction support garment for a few weeks after your surgery.
