How long does a Breast Lift last?

A breast lift, commonly known as breast uplift surgery or a mastopexy, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure available for those looking to achieve a fuller, uplifted breast shape

Many patients experience drooping and a loss of shape in their breasts over time, resulting in ptosis (sagging breasts). This can be due to several factors such as weight fluctuations, ageing, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Breast lift surgery can improve ptosis and the shape and size of the breasts, creating a more youthful appearance.

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and breast tissue to create an uplifted, more youthful look.

If someone were to lose weight, go through hormonal changes (like pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding), or simply age over time, they may notice that their breasts sag.

Breast uplift surgery can be combined with breast enlargement (with implants) to increase the size and projection of the chest. This is preferred by patients with minimal existing breast tissue.

How long does a breast lift last?

MYA recommends that a breast lift procedure (without implants) should last a long period of time, without  needing to be reassessed by a surgeon if they continue to remain fit and healthy and look after their breasts.

It is very important that patients attend their post-operative appointments with all MYA medical professionals. Patients must also follow all instructions provided by the MYA surgeon and clinical team to ensure they have the best opportunity to achieve the desired result. Failure to follow this guidance may compromise the breast lift results.

What impacts breast lift longevity?

MYA recommends patients continue to wear their post-op surgery bra to sleep in following their 6-8 week surgeon sign-off, and that patients must wear a sports bra when exercising to ensure the longevity of their breast lift results

Certain factors may impact a patient's breasts following breast uplift surgery: as we age, our skin loses elasticity and doesn't bounce back as well as it did in our younger years, and sudden weight fluctuations can cause the skin to stretch and droop.

Breastfeeding and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can also impact the breast lift results, therefore, some patients choose to wait until after they've had children to have breast lift surgery.

A breast lift can be combined with a breast enlargement (implants). This is often known as an augmented mastopexy. A surgeon will use implants and an uplift to achieve fuller, uplifted breasts.

What type of breast lift surgery is right for me?

Different types of breast lift procedures are performed to lift the breasts, such as mastopexy, augmented mastopexy and modified mastopexy. Depending on the patient's natural breast quality and existing breast tissue, MYA experts will examine the patient's breasts at their surgeon consultation and recommend a tailored treatment plan.

Generally, MYA surgeons recommend a breast uplift with implants (augmented mastopexy) to patients who present with ptosis and are looking to achieve a fuller breast shape. A mastopexy-only procedure is often recommended to patients who do not want breast implants, but have excess breast skin and tissue and are looking to achieve an uplifted breast shape to alleviate ptosis.

A modified mastopexy may be recommended to patients who present with only a small degree of ptosis and require a nipple lift and breast reduction.

Some patients may require a two-stage breast augmentation. If a patient is displaying severe ptosis, their MYA surgeon may recommend performing a breast lift first, then performing a second procedure and adding breast implants at a later date once the breasts have healed from the first operation.
