Introducing Deshara Pariag

I work as a Person-Centred Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and have worked in mental health services for over 8 years. Previously practicing in the NHS and Harley Street, I now run a nationwide private counselling practice, My Life Counselling UK, specialising in anxiety disorders, depression and cosmetic surgery psychology and wellbeing.

Counselling can help individuals who are struggling with low mood, anxiety and general mental wellbeing, talking to a professional can help you discover a new path and provide you with a safe and confidential space to overcome challenges and move forward. The therapeutic relationship is patient-centred, focusing on positive outcomes and solutions. My counselling appointments are provided online via video call or alternatively, face to face at our London and Essex practice.

Online counselling services, specifically video calls, have become an increasingly popular option over the last two years, allowing me to meet with clients across the UK and still deliver the same personal and empathetic service that you would receive in person. Many of my clients choose to attend the sessions via video call, as this fits around their busy schedules and they feel more relaxed in the comfort of their own home and surroundings.

Counselling and Cosmetic Surgery Wellbeing

I offer pre-operative counselling assessments to cosmetic surgery providers like MYA, and work closely with patients who require counselling support or services in the lead up to their procedure or during their recovery. There are many patient benefits for pre-op counselling sessions, this includes coping skills, CBT, managing post-surgery blues and putting a counselling treatment plan in place prior to surgery.

Working with cosmetic surgery providers:

I assist cosmetic surgery providers and surgeons to ensure the patient is suitable to move forward with their desired procedure, by assessing any underlying mental health difficulties that could cause mental health repercussions during the cosmetic surgery process. This ensures the patient has the best cosmetic surgery experience and outcome and that it is also the right time for them to undergo a cosmetic procedure.

Working with cosmetic surgery patients:

To discuss their motivation for cosmetic surgery, help prepare patients for the emotional and physical changes they may experience pre and post-surgery, manage their expectations, and help manage pre-surgery nerves and anxieties.

Counselling FAQs:

Why have I been referred to speak to a psychiatrist before having cosmetic surgery?

Firstly, MYA take a serious approach to patient’s psychological wellbeing and therefore assess patients in a rigorous manner pre-operatively. All patients must complete a health questionnaire ahead of their first appointment with the surgeon which asks specific questions about their psychological health as well as their physical health as part of the informed consent process.

The Professional Standards for Cosmetic Practice (RCS, 2016) state that surgeons who perform cosmetic surgery should make attempts to identify the psychologically vulnerable patients and, where they have concerns, be prepared to avoid or defer any operation, pending psychological assessment.

Why does MYA need to know about my medical history and medication I have taken for my mental health?

Independent Healthcare providers are encouraged by governing bodies to work in partnership as professionals to manage the patient’s best interests and ensure the safety of the patient.

All patients who have stated they have a previous or current history of psychological concerns must provide evidence that their condition is controlled. This is verified via their GP, Psychologist/Psychiatrist and or Counsellor thus providing additional framework for the Surgeon and Anaesthetist’s holistic decision making about the proposed procedure/surgery.

Why does MYA reject patients?

Some patients may be assessed as having an ongoing condition that is not medically stable / controlled or having a cosmetic procedure would be detrimental to a person’s mental well-being. In these circumstances any decisions taken are open to constant review and patients are welcome to attend for another Surgeon consultation should there be a change in their health status.
