A new lip implant procedure from California-based Evera Medical has been approved for testing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
FulFil Lip is a balloon that can be filled with saline and inserted into the lip in the same way that breast implants work.
The company already markets a product called VerFil, which is a saline solution that plumps skin around the eye.
"FulFil Lip will be the first treatment of any kind to be specifically labelled for lip enhancement," explained Dr Michael Lesh, chief executive of Evera Medical.
It is thought that patients who wish to undergo FulFil Lip will get to choose what size they go to, but the official size charts are yet to be released.
This follows research from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which revealed that lip augmentations have increased by 27 per cent since 2000.
A separate study by the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery found that Angelina Jolie's lips top the most requested among patients.
