In the world of cosmetic surgery there really are no limits to what you can achieve, and a trend for a new form of surgery in Japan has proved just that. In Japanese culture there is a great emphasis placed upon the predicting of futures through reading palm reading or Palmistry. The ancient method of future telling is extremely popular in Japan and palm readers can charge customers more than £50 to tell them what the future could have in store for them. It seems however that some individuals have decided to cast destiny aside and to take a role in deciding their own destiny – by altering their palm lines through surgery. The treatment allows the patient to change the lines on their palms and as a result they believe, change the path of their future lives. Attention to detail is key as the surgeon Dr Matsuoaka reveals that the surgeon must “make a shaky incision on purpose, because palm lines are never completely straight”. The trend is for men to have their money and success line extending whereas women want their marriage or love line made longer. Whether or not the procedure is effective in changing your fortunes is uncertain, although some who have received the procedure have found that their luck had indeed changed. Matusoka isn’t so convinced however as he believes that the placebo effect has some part to play in his patient’s change of fortunes.
