Female breast reduction, also referred to as mammoplasty, is a procedure that reduces the volume and weight of the breast. For many women, they can no longer cope with the physical strain and exertion that larger breasts can cause. As well as this discomfort and pain, larger breasts can also have a detrimental impact on self-esteem. Women with larger breasts often become self-conscious which can affect their clothing choices and willingness to take part in certain activities.
Understanding Breast Reduction Surgery
Bilateral breast reduction surgery (reduction of both breasts) at the MYA London is performed by one of our specialist breast surgeons. The procedure itself can take 2-4 hours and will be performed under general anaesthetic. In most cases you will need to stay overnight in London, with some cases requiring a 2-night stay.
Breast reduction surgery involves removing fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, which are then shaped with the nipple/areola repositioned using dissolvable stitches (unless otherwise required). See our before and after photos here.
Following your Surgery
After your surgery you’ll be required to take between 7 -10 days off work. Depending on the nature of your job this could be increased. You will also be advised to refrain from exercise and any heavy lifting for 6 weeks; your supportive bra must be worn during this period.
Post-op care is extremely important to us. We therefore insist that you attend all of your scheduled appointments after your procedure.
