Liposuction is a surgical procedure that improves the body shape by removing excess fat deposits that are located between the skin and muscle.
LIPOSUCTION – HOW MUCH FAT CAN BE REMOVED?
A good candidate for liposuction is someone who lives a healthy lifestyle and has realistic expectations about what can be achieved. MYA require you to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) between 18-30 to ensure you will get the best results possible.
WHAT IS LOCAL ANAESTHETIC AND SEDATION?
Local Anaesthesia (LA) involves injecting or the application of anaesthetic drug to a specific area of the body to prevent that area feeling pain. LA is typically used with sedation – a sedative drug that produces a state of calm or sleep.
HOW SOON CAN I EXERCISE AFTER SURGERY?
You can return to normal activities the day after your procedure but you must avoid vigorous activities like exercise or sports for at least 4 weeks. Some people heal faster than others so please speak to your nurse during your follow up appointments about this.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
The most common areas for liposuction are: abdomen (stomach), flanks (muffin tops or hips), outer thighs, inner thighs and arms. Other popular areas are knees (the fatty deposits above the knee cap) and neck area (to remove a double chin). These can be performed in combination with each other or as individual procedures. There are obviously limits as to how many areas you can have treated at the same time due to time constraints.
CAN YOU GAIN THE FAT BACK?
Liposuction is good for improving your shape, which should be long-lasting, but it does not affect your overall size and weight. Unfortunately, if you eat more calories than you burn off, then weight will accumulate after surgery. You need to remember that lipo is not a weight loss tool and it should not be seen as an ‘easy fix’ for an unhealthy lifestyle. It should be used to remove stubborn fat from problem areas so a healthy diet and exercise are important for maintaining your results after liposuction.
DOES LIPOSUCTION SCAR?
The incisions made for liposuction are very small (usually less than 0.5cm) and are located near to the site where the fat will be removed. These incisions will form into scars but will disappear over time.
WHAT IS A GARMENT?
You will be expected to wear a garment for 24 hours/day, for the first 4-6 weeks post procedure. The garment will be specific to the areas in which you have chosen, and your measurements will be taken at your pre-op to ensure that it will fit you correctly. If you are having Vaser to your upper torso, your garment will include a thick foam vest. The garment can also be shown to you by the clinic staff pre-procedure. The purpose of the garment is to ensure that your results are the best that they can possibly be. In some cases, patients can find the garments uncomfortable and ‘bulky’, and will not fit underneath tight clothing, therefore please bear this in mind if you have fitted work clothing (all garments come in black).
DO YOU HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS?
It is very important that you have a clear understanding of what you want the surgeon to achieve with your end result, but also what is physically possible. The surgeon cannot guarantee weight loss or size differences with clothing, nor can they alter the bone structure or remove skin during this procedure. It is important to be aware that following fat removal to your abdomen, there is a chance that you might require an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure depending on the elasticity of your skin. Please discuss this with your Surgeon if you have any further concerns or questions about this.
CAN I WASH MY GARMENT?
Yes, you can wash your liposuction garment. Garment washing instructions: only hand wash (max temp 25˚C) do not use bleach, do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not dry clean and do not remove stains with solvents. You may gently massage the treated area 15 days after the procedure but must avoid vigorous massage for at least 4 weeks.
WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTER SURGERY?
During your immediate recovery following liposuction, there may be some pain and discomfort. You will typically feel sore in the areas treated and this will be most intense 2-4 days after surgery. The area can feel tender for up to 4 weeks but this will gradually subside after that point.
HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO TAKE OFF WORK?
After liposuction, MYA recommend you take 7 days off work for office based work. If you undertake heavy lifting or other strenuous physical activity please speak with your clinic nurse or surgeon to best advise.
WHAT’S THE PRICE FOR LIPOSUCTION?
Prices vary for every individual patient as it depends on how many areas you’re having treated and how much fat needs removing. If you’re having trouble funding your procedure, MYA offer fantastic finance options so make sure you check out our incredible finance calculator.
