What is Liposuction?

Fat removal is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat cells beneath the skin using a hollow stainless-steel tube, with the assistance of a powerful vacuum to reshape and contour the area of treatment to give a shapely appearance. Multiple areas of the body can be treated for fat removal at the same time, whether you are looking to remove fat from your stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck, MYA’s highly experienced team of surgeons and state-of-the-art operating facilities are the right choice for your fat removal procedure.

Fat removal is not designed as a treatment for obesity, or a weight loss solution, it aims to correct and improve bodily contours by removing pockets of fat from areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction is most effective in patients who have gained excess weight following pregnancy or due to ageing but still have good skin quality and elasticity. Liposuction if not an effective procedure for patients with excess loose skin, or those looking to improve cellulite dimpling or stretch marks.

Different Types of Liposuction

  • Traditional fat removal - a shallow tube (cannula) is inserted through the small incisions and manipulated to break down the fat cells so it can be vacuumed out of the body.

  • Vaser Liposuction - uses ultrasonic energy whereby patented small probes transmit sound waves which then break apart the fat on contact.

  • Fat removal combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) - Fat removal will typically be combined with a tummy tuck if a patient presents with loose excess skin that needs removing from the abdomen.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction can be a lifechanging procedure for many patients, instilling confidence and contributing to improved health and lifestyle. Benefits of fat removal surgery include the following:

  • Increased confidence self-esteem

  • Motivation to pursue a healthier lifestyle

  • Removal of fat that is resistant to diet and exercise

  • Contoured treatment areas

  • Prevents excess sweating and chaffing

  • Ability to have wider choice in clothing

  • Body feels more in proportion

  • Can have lasting benefits if patients maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise

Liposuction Surgery

Our expert fat removal surgeons will assess your BMI (body mass index). This is a measurement of your total fat content in relation to your height and gives a baseline for the surgeon to determine your suitability for liposuction. There are physiological limits as to the quantity of fat that can be removed at any one time, therefore patients under and over a certain BMI may not be suitable for fat removal surgery.

Liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). After thorough assessment of the patients BMI the surgeon will recommend the best treatment plan for you and discuss the risks, limitations and benefits of fat removal surgery.

Fat removal is carried out under general anaesthetic and can take between 30 mins – 3 hours, depending on the patient’s requirements and the number of treatment areas. The surgery can be performed as a day case, or the patient may be required to stay overnight to recover in one of our MYA hospitals.

After surgery, patients may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling to the affected areas, this is normal following a fat removal procedure. Pain relief will be provided to ease discomfort, bruising and swelling should start to subside after 7-21 days. Every patient heals differently, therefore, swelling and bruising can take 12 weeks or longer to subside.

MYA advise patients to take 7-10 days off work following fat removal surgery. Patients will be required to wear tight compression garments for 4-6 weeks post-op to aid healing and prevent excess swelling, it is important that patients attend all their post-operative nurse appointments at our MYA clinical hubs.

How much does Liposuction Cost?

Fat removal procedures with MYA can cost anywhere from £3,995. Procedure costs are tailored to individual requirements, and you will receive a fixed price following your surgeon assessment.
