What are tubular breasts?
Tubular breasts (also known as tuberous breast syndrome or tuberous breast deformity), is a condition in which breast tissue doesn't develop fully during puberty. The mammary glands stop growing and, as a result of early growth being limited, there is abnormal development in the shape and size of the breasts.
The condition can present itself in one or both breasts and can range from mild to severe. The breast tissue usually forms in the nipple area and there is a lack of breast tissue in the lower pole of the breast, often causing enlarged or puffy areolas which create cone-like shaped breasts.
Tubular boobs are fairly common among women and many don’t seek out corrective treatments. If you think you have tuberous breast syndrome, it’s nothing to worry about and won’t cause any threat to your health.
Historically patients have reached out to the NHS for corrective procedures such as tubular breast correction, but in recent years these procedures are no longer offered as part of funding on the NHS.
Features of tubular breasts?
Tubular breasts have varying characteristics not just underdeveloped breasts. Typical characteristics include of tubular breasts include:
Enlarged or puffy areolas (area around the nipples)
Unusually wide spacing between the breasts
Minimal breast tissue
Sagging (ptosis)
Higher than normal breastfold
Asymmetry
A narrow base at the chest wall
Every patient's breasts are different. Some may only have mild characteristics of tubular breasts, while these features could be more noticeable in others.
What are the effects of tuberous breasts?
While tuberous breasts aren’t anything to worry about medically, they can cause a number of mental issues for those living with them.
Many women struggle with low self-esteem, making relationships, work life, and social occasions difficult. It’s also more challenging to find bras that are supportive and fit properly, and it’s often harder to buy flattering clothes when you have tuberous breasts.
How to correct tubular breasts
Tubular breast correction surgery is a popular procedure in the UK for patients who are looking to achieve a fuller, more rounded breast shape. It is not uncommon for each breast to be slightly different, so they may require different procedures and implant sizes.
Depending on the severity of the patient’s tubular breast(s), one of our highly skilled surgeons will recommend the best treatment plan for them.
To correct tubular breasts, surgeons will reduce the size of the areola and increase the upper fullness and size of the breasts, often with the use of a breast implant. The aim of tubular breast correction is to reduce the size of enlarged or puffy areolas, increase breast fullness, and create a more rounded shape.
Most patients are recommended a straightforward breast enlargement to improve the appearance of their tuberous breasts. However, in some cases, a breast enlargement (using breast implants) will be combined with a nipple lift, reduction, or breast uplift to correct the shape of the breast and nipple to achieve the patient’s desired outcome.
Tubular breast correction procedures can take between 1-2 hours and are performed under general anaesthetic. Depending on personal preference and surgeon recommendations, patients have the option to be a day patient or stay overnight to recover in one of our MYA hospitals.

Tubular Breast Correction Surgery
Each breast will be treated as a separate procedure and the surgeon may recommend a combination of procedures or two different implant sizes.
In severe cases, a two staged surgery is performed, but in most instances it is possible to complete the surgery in one stage. Depending on your breasts, the recommended procedures could include one or a combination of the following treatments:
Breast Enlargement (Breast Augmentation)
Breast Uplift (Mastopexy)
Breast Augmentation with Mastopexy
Breast Augmentation with Modified Mastopexy
Nipple Lift
Nipple Reduction
At your consultation, our expert surgeons will run through the available options and will recommend the best procedure type for you and your desired result.
Tubular Breast Augmentation Recovery
As the surgery is different for a variety of tubular breasts, the recovery can also vary, due to the individual patient and implant sizes.
However, the general rule of thumb is that patients will take around 6 weeks to recover from breast augmentation surgery, and it can take up to a year for the augmented breasts to fully settle.
At your consultation, you will be given a more accurate timescale, related to your chosen procedure type.
To ensure your recovery is going to plan, it’s vital you attend your post-op appointments, so a MYA nurse can monitor your healing and deliver appropriate wound care.
