Rhinoplasty (Nose job) FAQs

WILL A RHINOPLASTY AFFECT MY BREATHING?

It is quite common for there to be some difficulty with breathing through the nose during the first week or so.  When the swelling disappears this normally resolves. However, occasionally the way you breathe will feel different due to the reduction in the size of your nose. This won’t cause breathing problems.

WHAT TYPES OF NOSE JOB ARE THERE?

Nose job types include open and closed rhinoplasty, septo-rhinoplasty, secondary-rhinoplasty, augmented rhinoplasty and alar base reduction.

HOW DO NOSE JOBS WORK?

A rhinoplasty involves a surgical procedure to alter the shape of your nose. See the Procedure page for a full explanation of how it works.

CAN I REMOVE MY SPLINT?

Although you will be eager to see your final results, you may not remove your splint at any point. Your MYA nurse will remove this under strict surgeon instruction and this will be around 7-14 days after your surgery. It can be a bit uncomfortable as you’re wearing it 24 hours/day but it’s a very important part of your care and your end result. The nose job filler packing will be removed from your nose prior to discharge.

HOW DO I SLEEP AFTER SURGERY?

You need to sleep propped up on pillows, with your shoulders raised for the first 7 to 10 days. You need to make sure that you avoid sleeping face down or resting on your nose for at least 6 weeks.

WHEN CAN I EXERCISE AGAIN?

You can start going to the gym at around 6 weeks post-operatively. This excludes heavy lifting and contact sports, which you can usually start again between 6 months and 1 year with great caution. While your nose may appear visibly healed, internally this process can take over a year as the cartilage, tissue and bone will remain delicate and susceptible to easier injury if you suffer any trauma.

DOES A NOSE JOB HURT?

During the procedure, you will be under general anaesthetic, and therefore will not feel any pain.

WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTER SURGERY?

During your immediate recovery following rhinoplasty, there may be some pain and discomfort. You are given pain relief to ease any discomfort you may have but it will normally subside after 7-14 days.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO TAKE OFF WORK?

After rhinoplasty, MYA recommend you take a minimum of 10 days off work to rest.

WILL I HAVE SCARS AFTER MY RHINOPLASTY?

The location of your scars will depend on the incision site for the type of rhinoplasty you have. If you have closed rhinoplasty, your scars will be completely hidden inside your nose. If you are having an open rhinoplasty, there will be a small scar on the base of your nose between your nostrils. It’s usually not noticeable unless you get up close to look at it. Because it’s under your nose, it’s hidden from plain sight.

HOW MUCH IS A NOSE JOB?

Prices vary for every individual patient as it depends on what type of rhinoplasty you have. If you’re having trouble funding your procedure, MYA offer fantastic finance options so make sure you check out our incredible finance calculator.
