MYA's guide to breast revision surgery

Breast revision surgery is done to replace breast implants, correct issues from past surgeries or remove the implant altogether.

Here's everything you need to know about breast revision surgery, including the benefits and the procedure overview.

What is breast revision surgery?

Breast revision surgery, also known as corrective breast surgery, involves replacing the breast implants to change or improve the look.

Breast implant replacement is common in those who want to achieve a different look from when they first had breast surgery. However, it can also be beneficial to those who have had issues with their breast implants due to previous surgery.

Breast implant removal can also be offered if the patient no longer wants them. However, this will usually have to be combined with an uplift to reduce ptosis (sagging of the breasts) and create a youthful look.

A breast reduction revision takes around 1-2 hours to complete and is done under general anaesthetic.

When can I get breast revision surgery?

A corrective breast surgery procedure can only be completed after 12 months from your original surgery date, so your scar and breast tissue are fully healed.

However, if a patient is experiencing capsular contracture (when the scar tissue tightens around the implant, causing discomfort and noticeable changes), or if the breast implant has slipped out of place, exceptions are made to prevent further complications.

Is revision breast surgery worth it?

Revision breast surgery is recommended to be done every 10-15 years to maintain the shape and ensure maximum implant health.

As a breast augmentation revision is also used to correct previous surgeries, a key benefit is an increase in confidence. The improved shape and size greatly improve patients' quality of life, make them feel more comfortable in relationships and make shopping for flattering tops, bras and bikinis much easier.

Procedure overview: Breast revision surgery

Breast revision surgery involves making a small incision (typically between 2-3 inches) along your original scar line in the breast crease to remove your current implants. Your surgeon will then remove the capsule (scar tissue), repair the pocket and insert the new breast implants either in front of the muscle, between or underneath - the placement will depend upon what has been discussed with the surgeon and your previous implant placement.

The incisions will be closed with either dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures, depending on your surgeon’s technique. Your surgeon will put dressings on your incisions which must not be removed until your post-op appointment with a MYA nurse at your local clinical hub.

If needed, revision surgery can also be combined with other procedures like a breast lift, so the patient gets the exact result they're looking for.

Corrective breast surgery recovery

Similarly to other breast surgery procedures, it takes around 6-8 weeks to recover.

Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work to rest at home and get used to the new change. During this time, you will be invited to your local MYA clinic for a post-op review of your healing.

For a minimum of 6 weeks, you should avoid any form of heavy lifting and high-intensity workouts. However, gentle exercise is advised to prevent the formation of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

To protect the stitches and reduce swelling, a post-op bra must be worn for a minimum of 6 weeks or until signed off by your surgeon. Some patients like to wear this (or a sports bra) for longer for added support.

It's important to note that all patients heal at different rates, and it takes up to 12 months for the final result to reveal itself. If you have any concerns about your healing, don't hesitate to contact your clinical hub or our 24/7 emergency helpline.
