Breast Enlargement/Implants

The purpose of having breast implants (Mammaplasty) is to enlarge and increase the fullness of the breasts, alter the shape of the breasts or repair them after an accident or surgery.

What does the procedure involve?

Most breast enlargements are performed under general anesthetic and this is the preferred method of most surgeons though in some cases it may be performed under local anesthetic, referred to as twilight surgery. The operation is the same for both but with twilight surgery the patient is awake, though heavily sedated, during the procedure and is able to talk to the surgeon and nurses.

During the operation the surgeon will make an incision either underneath the armpit, beneath the nipple, underneath the breast or in the abdomen. A pocket is then made under the breast tissue (or in some cases under the chest muscle) and the implant is inserted before the incision is stitched up. Implants may be filled with silicone or saline (salt water).

What are the benefits and what are the risks?

Benefits

After surgery, breasts will be larger and more pert. Because there is such variety in the shape and size of the implants available it allows the patient to achieve the look they are after.

Risks

One possible risk of having breast implants is implant hardening which is also known as capsular contracture. This occurs when the layer of scar tissue that the body normally grows around the implant contracts or shrinks. This can be quite painful and can lead to the implant losing its shape. If this occurs then the implant will have to be removed. In some cases rippling or creasing may occur around the nipple area and some women may experience a loss of sensation in the nipples or in the breast. As with all types of surgery infection is a possible risk of having breast implants, though this can usually be alleviated with antibiotics. Rupture or leakage of breast implants can occur but is rare. In some instances breast implants may also affect the ability to breastfeed. Lastly, there is some concern that breast implants may affect the reliability of mammograms, as the machines which are used may not always be able to ’see’ past the implant. This is known as mammography interference.

Is it the right procedure for me?

Many people opt for implants because they are unhappy with the shape and size of their breasts. This may be because they feel they are generally too small or have shrunk and become saggy looking after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of surgery depends on the extent of the work being done but can take between one and three hours.

What happens after surgery?

You will be required to stay in hospital overnight though you may be allowed home after a few hours following twilight surgery. You will need to take a week off work to rest and avoid exercise for one month. When you go home you will be very sore, bruised and swollen. You will be wrapped with gauze bandage and have drainage tubes placed in the incision. After several days these will be removed and you will have to wear a supportive, non-underwired bra for several more weeks after which the swelling will have gone down. Any scars may take several months for the pinkness to reduce.

How much is it likely to cost?

Prices can vary between £4,000 and £7,000

      Hi Claire,
It is perfectly safe to breast feed if you have breast implants. However, the amount of milk may be less than there would be normally.

    Hello,
I would like some advice..I live in Wales so am wondering if there is a clinic in cardiff?+if they perform surgery in cardiff? Are all breast enlargement consultations free? Could I have a consultation on a saturday? How long from the time you have a consultation till you have the op? I am really nervous about this as I have never had to go into hospital for anything..but have been wanting to have big boobs since I was 13!!I’m 24 now+am 34A which I think is a joke!I don’t think tops look right on me because there’s nothing there.(would like to go up to a nice full c-cup..natural looking as possible)What is your 5year aftercare?would I have to pay out again if it went wrong? cuz you hear of so many horror stories about boob jobs gone wrong. Would love to have this done but am soooo scared.

    1. Sophie on 19.10.2007 at 14:30 (Reply)

      Hi Miss Ali,
We do not have a clinic in Wales but we do have consultation days cumming up in Cardiff on Thursday 1st November and Friday 30th November. This will take place at the St Davids Hotel and Spa Havannah Street, Cardiff Bay.

Yes, all of our consultations are free including your consultation with your surgeon. We would not perform the proceedure in Wales. I believe the nearest hospital would be the Manchester Lifestyle hopital. There would be no extra cost for travel. As you are so worried my best advice would be to come for the free consultation. That way you can have all your questions answered face to face and one of our trained patient co-ordinators can talk you through the process step by step. Hope this helps!

Also, where are your hospitals that would carry out my augmentation (I’m from Doncaster).

      Hi Ashleigh,
Our consultations are absolutely free and during the consultation you are able to hold and feel different impant profiles. We don’t have a discount for students but always ask if there are any offers on.
I doubt the NHS would fund any of it as they are cutting down on cosmetic procedures. It is advised to stop smoking as it has been proven that it affects healing. Your weight sounds fine.
With regards to finance, I cannot help. You would need to come in for a free consultation to discuss this.

  27. QUESTION:
amy on 23.10.2007 at 20:59 (Reply)

    Hi,
i know that this is probably really cheeky but id like your opinion please! I had a breast enlargment done by another firm in july this year. Everything went fine until the middle of august when i got an infection in my right breast. I took antibiotics which seemed to clear it up but since then it has been firmer compared to my left breast. But i saw my surgeon and he said there was nothing to worry about. Then last week, had a few shooting pains in my right breast and on sunday it started to be painful again. Then last night it had got harder and alot hotter compared to my left breast. As these were the same simptoms as before i tried phoning my surgeon yesterday and today but hes not got back to me yet. So iv been to the doctors today to get some more antibiotics but am quite worried about what is causing this. To me it seems there must be some kind of problem with the implant or the infection did not fully clear last time. Could you please give me your thoughts? and also if it is just an infection which can be sorted will that breast be as soft as the other one eventually? Many thanks x

Would a enlargement rectify this or would I need to have an uplift too? Since losing the weight I for once feel good about myself then I look at where my breast should be and oh dear.

hi i have been on alot of sites and rang up for information from alot of people for a breast enlargement, but everyone says that you HAVE to quit smoking for 1 week before the procedure and 1 week after it aswel. Is this a rule that is set in stone or is it just advice, as i have tried many times to quit and can not do it no matter what i use and i feel this is losing me the chance to have the surgery. I noticed on your website it says we advise people to quit and i was just wondering if I would have to or not?

  53. QUESTION:
Pam on 04.11.2007 at 20:00 (Reply)

I am considering breast augmentation, the main reason is because my left breast is about 2 cup sizes smaller than the right.
I have seen an NHS doctor, who has advised that he could do it, however, I am 2 stone over weight, and he has advised me I need to loose this first. Is this a problem at Mya?
The main reason I dont want to wait is that I am getting married in May 2008. As a result of this I wanted to know what date would be the latest I should have this done in order to be “fit and heathly” for my big day?
The final question would be around the cost, as not only would I want an implant in the right brest, I would also want an uplift in the right, and maybe a little implant in the right (left brest is currently a C- right is DD/E)
    Regards.

It depends if you are planning on the losing the weight after the proceedure.

If not and you are happy with your weigh and it is stable we may be able to help.

is it true that if you have your nipples moved they can move or the tissue can die and you have to have them tatooed on?

      Hi Samii,
The first one is not true. You can fly after you recover from the procedure and once the risk of DVT has gone. The second is possible but rare. The nipple only needs to be removed after breast reduction or an uplift.

You would need to come in for a consultation to discuss prices and the proceedure. You can have the initial consultation, surgical consultation and pre op check all in the same day. You then need time to reflect but if you decide to go ahead then you could potential have it done in within 2 weeks.

I am desperate for a breast enlargement. I am aparently a 38D but my breasts are such an awfull shape I feel that implants will help make them actually look this size. I am 5′6″ and about 14st 7lbs. Will I need to lose weight before I can have surgery? I also have no clevage, and no self confidence which is the other reason why I am wanting to do this.

How much is the procedure likely to cost? Will I be able to get funding?

Please please please help me get my dream breasts.

Just wondered if i had the moles removed, would this be unsuitable as the scars would stretch?
Also would moles be stretched if they are on the breast area after enlargement?
    Thank you!

I am looking to have a breast enlargement. I went for a consultation with another company about a year ago. I Have always been very self conscious about my breasts as they are atleast a AA and I am a size 14/16. I am 5″6 and I weigh 14 and a half stone and I am happy with my body other than my chest as I believe I have tubular breasts. I spoke with a surgeon last year and he told me i do not have the sub mammay part of my breast… basically there is less than a centimeter from the bottom of my nipple and the crease of my breast. to top it all off i have inverted nipples! i just wondered whether i would be able to have the surgery with MYA at my current weight and would the surgeon be able to do anything to increase the gap from my nipple and my crease if the surgery was performed?

    1. Sophie on 11.01.2008 at 14:37 (Reply)

i’ve wanted a breast enlargement for a while now and now i have turned 18 im looking into it, i was just wondering is it true that you would have to have them redone every couple of years and if this is true will it be the same price as the first procedure?

    1. Sophie on 11.01.2008 at 15:57 (Reply)

      Hi Maria,
No this is not true. It depends on the individual. Academically speaking it is advised to change them every 10 – 15 years but there are people that gone longer. It differs with each person. It does cost a bit more to have the re-augmentation.

Hello. I have always wanted a breast enlargment. I am almost 30 and a size 8. I have a very small frame and am very thin, natrually. With this I have almost no breasts. I can buy my bras (and tops)( I think I would be a size 32a) from the childrens department in the shops. I would like to know if a breast enlargment is possible and if it can look almost natural? I have been desperate for breasts since I was a young teen, but at the same I dont want two hard rocks stuck to my chest. What do you think?

To have any surgery with MYA you need to be over 18. With this procedure we would advise that you have children first as this procedure leaves you unable to breast feed.

Hiya, just a quick question, is it possible to go up two sizes? I am an A cup but am looking to be a D… also how is cost calculated? Is it on how large the implant is i.e is it more expensive the larger you go? Also I am looking to have surgery in around June, when would you suggest for me to have a consultation? Thanks, Kat

Yes 2 sizes should be fine. You would need to discuss the prices in the free consultation. If you would like to have cosmetic surgery in June we would avise that you come in for you initial consultation about a month or two before.

This gives you plenty of time to think about it and get all your health checks out of the way.

      Hi Susan,
It depends on your weight at the time of operation. The protocol may slightly vary from one organization to another but we strongly advise loosing weight before the operation. Not only for the purpose of safe anesthesia but also to maintain a good result after the procedure.
