What is vaginal tightening?

Often referred to as vaginal rejuvenation, vaginal tightening can rebuild the pelvic floor and perineal muscles that may have been stretched or become weakened due to childbirth, ageing, or hormonal changes.

The procedure can help with the appearance of the vagina, sexual satisfaction and comfort levels. It involves making incisions within your vagina and removing excess skin, to reveal a tighter vagina.

Benefits of vaginal tightening treatment

If you’ve noticed unfortunate changes in your sexual sensitivity or bladder control due to weakened vaginal muscles, vaginal tightening could offer the following benefits:

  • Improved sexual function and sensitivity

  • Restores the vagina to a pre-childbirth appearance

  • Can improve urinary incontinence

  • Reduce discomfort during exercise or wearing certain clothing

  • Increased self-confidence

Tightening the vaginal tissues can also be combined with labial reduction or perineal surgery to address further issues. Depending on what you want to achieve, your surgeon will recommend the most suitable procedure type for you and your physical requirements.

Vaginal tightening surgery side effects

There are potential risks and complications involved in all surgical procedures. Those associated with vaginal tightening can include:

  • Scarring

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Blood clots

  • Vaginal collapse

  • Change in sensation

  • Inadequate vaginal depth

  • Nerve damage

  • Discharge

  • Lack of natural lubrication

  • Bowel puncture

Vaginal tightening procedure overview

Vaginal tightening surgery is done under general anaesthetic to ensure patients don't feel a thing.

Once you’re asleep, your surgeon will make incisions in your vaginal area to remove excess vaginal lining skin, tighten loose vaginal tissue and reduce the size of your vaginal opening. Once the appropriate changes have been made, they’ll close the incisions with dissolvable stitches.

Recovery from vaginal tightening

A full recovery from vaginal tightening surgery can take around 6 weeks, and you’ll be advised to take at least 2 weeks off work - especially if you have a physically demanding job.

You might feel uncomfortable for the first few days, but you can manage this with plenty of rest and appropriate pain medication.

You should avoid exercise, heavy lifting and sex for the first 6 weeks, and you’ll need to take care not to strain while on the toilet during this time, too. Swimming, bathing and the use of tampons will need to be avoided as well.

After 6 weeks, you’ll notice any swelling or bruising has disappeared and your final results will become visible.
