What is pelvic floor repair?

This surgical procedure is an option for those who might be unsatisfied with the appearance of their vagina or because they find that their sexual satisfaction and sensitivity have decreased.

The surgery itself involves a series of incisions made in the vaginal wall to access the weakened layers and strengthen the pelvic organs.

Benefits of pelvic floor repair

If you’ve noticed that your pelvic floor muscles have become stretched over time, either due to childbirth or ageing, pelvic floor repair surgery could help. This procedure can:

  • Enhance sensitivity

  • Heighten sexual experience

  • Improve urinary incontinence

  • Restore the appearance of your vagina

  • Reduce discomfort when exercising or wearing certain clothing

Risks and side effects of pelvic floor repair

There are potential risks and side effects involved in all surgical procedures, and pelvic floor repair is no different. The risks and side effects associated with the surgery can include:

  • Scarring

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Blood clots

  • Vaginal collapse

  • Changes in sensation

  • Nerve damage

  • Change to vaginal depth

  • Discharge

  • Lack of natural lubrication

  • Bowel puncture

  • Pelvic pain

  • Deep vein thrombosis

If you do experience any of these side effects, we encourage you to seek medical advice or contact your surgeon for advice.

Pelvic floor repair procedure overview

For pelvic floor repair surgery, you’ll be given a general anaesthetic to ensure that you stay asleep throughout the procedure.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will begin by making an abdominal incision or an incision in the front wall of your vagina (depending on your surgeon and physical requirements). This allows them to access the weakened vaginal layers, which are strengthened with a series of stitches.

If necessary, excess tissue will be removed for a neat and uniform appearance.

Pelvic floor repair surgery generally takes around 1-2 hours to complete.

Is pelvic floor repair right for me?

If you’re unhappy with the appearance or function of your vagina due to stretched and weakened muscles, pelvic floor repair surgery is a great option. It aims to repair the weakened muscles, improving urinary incontinence and sensitivity.

To be considered suitable for this surgery, you should be in generally good health and a non-smoker.

It’s also important that you understand the associated risks and have realistic expectations of the results. The final result and any potential complications will be discussed during your consultations.

Pelvic floor repair recovery

Following your surgery, you should take around 2 weeks off work to give yourself plenty of time to recover. You’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and sexual intercourse for the first 6 weeks after your pelvic floor repair.

As you recover, it’s important not to strain while on the toilet, use tampons, swim or bathe. You can resume these activities once you’re fully healed and feel physically comfortable with your vagina.

Within 6 weeks, any bruising or swelling that you might have should have dissipated.

Pelvic Floor Repair FAQ's

Will I have any scars?

As the surgery targets the muscles inside of your vagina, any scars that you have will be hidden.

However, if abdominal incisions are made, small scars will be left behind just under the belly button.

To keep scarring to a minimum, you must follow the aftercare advice given by your surgeon. You should also avoid sunbeds, wear sun protection if your scars are exposed and not smoke or vape, as sun exposure and nicotine can increase pigment and texture in the scar.
