Vaginoplasty

As we age, our bodies transform, with skin losing its tautness and once-firm areas becoming more relaxed. These signs of ageing can also extend to our intimate regions, and this is where vaginoplasty could be a potential solution.

What is a vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty, also known as vaginal tightening or vaginal rejuvenation, might initially seem like an extreme procedure. However, it has gained popularity among women who have experienced stretching of their pelvic floor and perineal muscles due to ageing or childbirth.

By addressing the muscles within the vagina, this procedure not only enhances the aesthetic appearance but also contributes to heightened sensitivity during intercourse and improved management of urinary incontinence.

Benefits of vaginoplasty surgery

If you’re struggling with vaginal laxity, vaginoplasty – aimed at muscle repair – promises an array of advantages, including:

  • Enhanced tightness

  • Improved sensitivity

  • Increased moisture and lubrication

  • Potential assistance with weak bladder concerns

  • Possible reduction of discomfort during sexual activity

Beyond the physical benefits, fortifying vaginal muscles can significantly boost confidence and self-esteem, especially in intimate moments.

Vaginoplasty risks

As with any surgical procedure, vaginal rejuvenation carries its own set of risks and potential side effects, including:

  • Bleeding

  • Infection

  • Scarring of the vaginal tissue and muscles

  • Vaginal stenosis, which leads to the formation of scar tissue that may cause the vagina to become narrower and shorter

  • Nerve damage

  • Potential pain during sexual intercourse

Vaginoplasty employs general anaesthesia, which comes with its own risks and side effects.

Vaginoplasty procedure

Before the surgery begins, general anaesthesia is administered to ensure that you remain asleep throughout the procedure.

Once under anaesthesia, your surgeon begins by making incisions inside the vagina to repair the muscles, remove extra skin, and tighten the vaginal canal. The size of the vaginal opening can also be made smaller in the process before incisions are closed using dissolvable stitches.

Vaginoplasty procedures typically take around 1-2 hours to complete.

Is vaginoplasty right for me?

Vaginoplasty might be an option if you’re dissatisfied with both the appearance and function of your vagina. Given that vaginal muscles can undergo laxity with age or stretching during childbirth, many women seek to improve function and address urinary incontinence through vaginoplasty.

The best way to find out if a vaginoplasty procedure is right for you is by meeting with the experts. Book an eConsult today to learn if the procedure is the best option for you.

Vaginoplasty recovery

The pace of recovery varies from person to person and depends on individual circumstances. During the initial days following the procedure, you should try to rest as much as possible. Expect some degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort. This discomfort can be managed with painkillers, adequate rest, and the application of cold compresses to mitigate swelling.

Throughout the recovery period, wearing loose clothing and underwear is recommended. You should also take care when cleansing the treated area. If menstruation occurs during the initial few weeks of recovery, opt for sanitary pads over tampons or menstrual cups.

Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for the first 6 weeks after the procedure. It’s also advised you refrain from steam rooms, saunas, and baths for the first 8 weeks or until advised by your surgeon to ensure effective recovery.

Regarding sexual intercourse, it’s best to wait at least 6 weeks after vaginoplasty before attempting it. When resuming sexual activity post-surgery, generous lubrication is advisable.

Vaginoplasty FAQ's

Is a vaginoplasty permanent?

While vaginoplasty strengthens vaginal muscles to enhance comfort and quality of life, it is essential to recognise that the results are not permanent. They can endure for several years, but won’t prevent the natural ageing process that affects muscles and vaginal tissues.

Incorporating a healthy lifestyle and pelvic floor exercises can extend the results, but doesn’t guarantee a look that lasts a lifetime.
