Half of Brits 'would have cosmetic surgery'

22/02/2008

Almost half of all UK adults - 44 per cent - would consider having cosmetic surgery at some point in their lives, it has been revealed.

Research by Mintel has found that tummy tucks and liposuction are the most popular with 40 per cent and 36 per cent respectively saying they would choose the procedures.

Alexandra Richmond, senior consumer analyst at the firm, claimed the figures were "staggering".

The survey revealed that British mothers are most likely to go under the knife, than any other group, with 57 per cent of those with children aged between five and nine stating they would have a tummy tuck and 49 per cent considering liposuction.

"Having children puts women's bodies through an awful lot of change and many may feel unhappy with their post-pregnancy figure," Ms Richmond explained. "This is a key reason why mums are most likely to want surgery."

Dr Angelica Kavouni, cosmetic surgeon, told the Guardian that under 15 per cent of women are lucky enough to regain their pre-pregnancy figure after giving birth.

In 2007, £148 million was spent in the UK on body reshaping operations - tummy tucks and liposuction - totalling 20,300 procedures.
