So ive gotten over the initial shock of my last post and calmed down abit as I was so upset. Now im wondering if anyone on here is anaemic and if it effected their surgery. Also im going to the docs next week and wanted to know how people get on with iron supplements and how quickly they raise the haemoglobin in their blood. My current level is 8.7 and I need to be at least 11.5 and I wanted to know if it would be possible to achieve this within 6 weeks or not. I really really wanted my surgery asap!

I don’t…. but if I was in your position I wouldn’t be waiting until next week for the doc – I would get down to Holland and Barratt, ask for some advice on the strongest iron you can take, and get started on them before seeing the GP. They may test you again and then you have a good indication of how much your levels rise in a week. I remember Flurodix (or something like that) when I was pregnant, was very good. Best of luck x

Oh yes, definitely start eating lots of iron rich foods too. And take vitamin c too – I think you need to have it to absorb the iron, if I remember right?

@alicem @emily2990 Thanks girls, I have spoken again to MYA and they have kept my op date reserved and my local doctor will do a blood test next week. In that time I will take some supplements and stick to red meat and vitamin c!! Hopefully it wont be as bad and I will be able to continue with my surgery day!!

Definitely have vitamin c when you consume high iron food/tablets. You could even just have a glass of oj with a meal. Vitamin c can increase absorption of iron by as much as 5 times.
I don’t really take iron, have been a veggie for 10 years and always had very high iron (know from giving blood regularly). I just have a glass of juice with my main meal or follow it up with a piece of fruit. 🙂 Hope you get your iron sorted in time, lovely!

(I’m not saying don’t take iron tablets, of course! Just saying, vitamin C really helps 🙂 ) x

I was anemic before my op, and I’m always suffering from low iron! Before my op I made sure I look my liquid iron everyday with vitamin C to help my body absorb it, and tried to change my diet to include high iron foods, even had spinach smoothies every day (I hate all veg or anything that’s green ?). 6 weeks should be more than enough time to get your levels up! Good luck xx
