What is ear pinning surgery?
Ear pinning surgery is called otoplasty. It is a surgical procedure that’s used most commonly to reduce the size of the ears.
Many people also undergo ear-pinning surgery if they’ve damaged their ears during sporting activities like rugby or after a trauma like a car accident.
It can be performed on one or both of the ears and can help restore confidence and make styling hair a lot easier.
How much does otoplasty cost?
Ear pinning and reshaping surgery prices start from £5,995. For further information on otoplasty costs, click here.
During your consultation, you’ll be given a guide price based on the look you’d like to achieve. Following a consultation with a MYA surgeon, and a physical and medical evaluation, you will be given a fixed price.
Otoplasty surgery
Prominent or protruding ears can affect the confidence of many people; male or female, young or old. Otoplasty surgery can make the ears less obvious by reducing how much they protrude and repairing any damage.
Ear reshaping can be performed under general or local anaesthetic, usually as a day case procedure, taking around one hour to complete. An incision is made behind the ear in the fold where the ear meets your head before cartilage and skin are removed or the ears are pinned back with a few fine stitches.
Otoplasty recovery
Recovery from cosmetic surgery is different for every patient, but for most, full otoplasty recovery is 6-8 weeks.
During this time, you may notice some tightness, itchiness, bruising and redness. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.
You will be expected to wear the supportive ear band (which will be provided by MYA) for 2-6 weeks and avoid getting the area wet for 7 days following an otoplasty procedure.
Due to the area of treatment, while the swelling is very discrete and the bruising minimal, healing is not always a symmetrical, and a slight difference between the right and left sides is not uncommon, but usually evens out with time. Absolute symmetry cannot be guaranteed and it is best to avoid constant comparison. It is also not uncommon for patients to require ear pinning surgery on only one ear that protrudes, this is called uni-otoplasty.
It is very important that you attend your post-operative appointments with MYA’s medical professionals as they are booked for you to ensure you receive the best care. It is equally important to ensure you follow all instructions for your pre and post-operative care to ensure you have the best opportunity to achieve the results from your otoplasty procedure.
During your post-op appointment with a MYA nurse, your healing will be closely monitored. If you have any concerns or questions about life after ear pinning surgery, this is the perfect time to ask.
*There is no guarantee of specific outcomes so individual results and experiences can vary from person to person.
