Hi girls, not sure if anyone is similar, I am 5ft 6, I thought it was 8st 3lb/8sr 4lb but I have just gone to Boots and done a BMI check, an ‘ideal weight’ for my height is from 8st 1lb. However I am 7st 12lb with a BMI 17.9 (apparently this should be 18.5). There’s only 3lb in it. Around the time of my menstrual cycle I’m approx. 8st3lb/8st4lb but it seems I must lose this. I’ve always been the same weight and have never fluctuated in either gaining and definitely not losing weight.

I am due to see the nurse on 17th March, does BMI effect the operation going ahead? I think I might be thinking into this too much?! Thanks x

I think if your bmi is under then she’ll do a blood test, not too sure though honey! Xxx

Thanks hun @samanthabella I went to the doctors a month ago and had a blood test, everything’s fine apart from a low iron count but this is being rectified with some iron tablets. I did inform my PC of this and put this on the health questionnaire at the initial consultation so should be ok! Xx

Hi @amylaceyx I think we should be ok I’m sure a few people have low iron it’s not uncommon, I’ll update once I’ve seen the nurse next week 🙂 you can get over the counter iron tablets, mine were prescribed but can be bought from a pharmacy. Xx

Hi girls, my BMI is ok as am quite muscly from training, so that bulks my weight up thank gawd! I was the same with low iron and was told it had to be at a minimum of 10to have surgery. Doc put me on 700mg tablets daily and its whizzed up, so I’d defo recommend prescription iron rather than over the counter iron. Xx

Hi @baapril2016yahoo-com oh no my iron count was 8 as of beginning of Feb, have been on approx 250mg (don’t know exact mg) since then but can tell that I do feel better. I think I’ll just have to wait and see but I’m starting to stress! Xx

Hi @CHLOE, I’d definitely agree that you can tell yourself when your iron is going up. Mine went from 7 to 28 and I just took the nurse a letter from my GP to show blood results and she said that was fine. I had 365mg tablets twice a day (they did make me feel really nauseous at first) and I ate really iron rich foods for an entire month! Maybe call your GP and ask if you can have stronger dose? Xx

@baapril2016yahoo-com Did you see the nurse first then have to go to your doctor for tablets? I just checked mine are ferrous fumarate 210mg once a day.. Xx

@CHLOE, mine were the same but 365mg and twice a day, so that it’d increase my iron fast. They gave me 100 tablets in Dec, before had even had my first consultation. By the time I had my pre-op nurse appt I’d finished all 100 tablets & eaten my own body weight in iron rich foods each day! I knew it had to be above 10 so did everything in my power to keep it high…. And still am. Feel sooooooo much better for it too. You could ring your GP and ask if you’d be ok to have your tablets twice daily to increase your iron quicker?? Xx

Thanks girls ? I’m gonna go my doctors tomorrow to see if I need them I’ve got a feeling I will if I’ve always been the same even through my pregnancy I was down as anemic my irons was always low! Like you said Chloe it’s common, so I don’t wanna worry to much as it can be easily sorted, I’ve only got 5 weeks left and I’m hoping I meet my nurse next week after I’ve seen my surgeon again x

@CHLOE, 4 weeks is plenty of time, don’t worry- eat as much iron rich foods as you can too and just generally look after yourself. Sure your doc will say it’s ok to double the dose too xx

@cmcqueen i wouldn’t worry about it, my bmi has always been between 17-18 as i have always been underweight and petite, i have already had one op last year and having my ba on sunday so have had 2 pre-ops and it doesn’t matter too much. my nurse at the pre-op check-up said its better to be slightly underweight than overweight xx

@amylaceyx hi Amy just thought I’d update you, I saw a doctor today who is actually trained as a breast surgeon as my normal doctor didn’t have any appointments (so that’s a plus!), he said as I have been on the ferrous fumarate 210mg for a few weeks now my iron count should be normal, however he did say I can take 2 tablets a day instead of 1 as you are actually allowed to up to 3 a day, just to be sure. So iron tablets may help you in other ways as your BMI is fine 🙂 x
