So I went for my pre op a couple of weeks ago where I told the nurse I’ve never been tested for anemia but I carry the thalassemia trait and I’ve taken iron tablets in the past due to self diagnosing as anemic. When the results came back the nurse told me I had low red blood cells and to start taking iron tablets. Anyone with the thalassemia trait will know that taking iron supplements can be dangerous. Now I’m stressing thinking my surgery is going to be cancelled due to my blood cells not being at the right level. My surgerys on the 24th I’m having more blood tests on the 17th and if it comes back as my levels haven’t gone up it’ll be cancelled until my levels are right but that’s not going to happen as taking iron puts me at risk. So annoying how it’s not just smooth running.

    Hey love,

Not exactly the same as you but I have low bloody platelet count (should be between 150,000-400,000) and after my first blood test myn was 115,000 which they are not happy with. I have had my second blood test and it’s now 122,000 so my results have been sent to surgeon to decide if he feels happy to carry out surgery which is booked for 6th June. I know it’s not the same but I do completely understand your frustration and disappointment. Finally get surgery sorted and happy with it all to then be told perhaps I can’t have it. 🙁 it’s not what u want to hear a couple of weeks before surgery xx
