Why is there a gap between my boobs?

The gap between your breasts in your sternum is often referred to as the cleavage. Having a sternal gap between your breasts is completely normal, and the distance between each breast can vary from person to person.

While the media and clothing industry have led people to believe that a naturally close cleavage is common, this is not the case for most people and this perception comes from years of clothing and wonder bras designed to enhance someone’s chest into this shape.

Does breast surgery close the gap between your breasts?

A breast enlargement creates a larger cup size and enhances the shape of your natural breasts. Following breast surgery that involves the placement of an implant, such as a Breast Enlargement or an Augmented Mastopexy patients may find that their breast implants initially sit high on the chest wall and the breasts appear swollen and sit far apart.

This is a normal part of the healing journey and to be expected post-operatively in implant patients. When an implant is inserted into the breast, the skin and breast tissue stretch to accommodate the new implant.

Over time as the implant settles and the drop and fluff process takes place the initial swelling and large gap between the breasts begins to reduce and the breasts form a full and rounded, shape.

The average recovery time for breast surgery is 6-8 weeks, however, it is important to remember that everyone heals at different rates and every breast is different. A breast enlargement is essentially an enlargement of the breasts you already have, and while some patients may find that breast implants have appeared to close or reduce the gap between their breasts, this is not typically the case.

What is a breast band?

Following breast surgery patients are required to wear a post-op bra for 6-8 weeks to support their breasts and aid healing. Every patient is provided with a personal care plan which is tailored to their individual requirements and surgeon preferences. Some MYA surgeons require patients to wear a breast band post-surgery, this assists with implant placement and helps to reduce the gap between the breasts.

What can I do to improve the gap between my breasts?

If you naturally have a larger space between your breasts, then it is likely that will still be the case post-op.

Although post-op bras and breast bands can sometimes feel tight and restrictive, it is important that patients continue to wear them day and night for the recommended time by their surgeon. Failure to do so, could affect their final result.

MYA recommend patients continue to wear supportive underwear following their final surgeon sign off and sports bras when exercising, as a patient’s breasts can continue to heal for up to a year post-op.  For more information relating to breast procedures or any other cosmetic surgery procedure available with MYA, head over to our Blog or the MYA Forum where there are articles and threads covering a wide range of topics.
