Cosmetic surgery is forever a hot topic that will always provoke debate so when Katie Price said that she would like to see the legal age for cosmetic surgery to be increased from 18 – 21 years of age, we wanted to know your opinion.
As the current UK law stands, the age of consent is 18 years old from which a patient can be consulted for cosmetic surgery. Katie Price argues that at 18, girls are having it for the wrong reasons and are not mature enough to understand the risks involved. Katie says: “21 year-olds know more. It’s true what they say: you’re wiser as you get older”.
We agree that you should always do your research before committing to surgery and it should for you and your own self confidence. But who is to say that there is a difference in someone’s ability to make an informed decision between the ages of 18 to 21?
We wanted to know what MYA Cosmetic Surgery patients thought so we posted the below questions on our social media pages and the response was amazing.
There was a clear split between patients agreeing with Katie that the age limit should be increased and others disagreeing saying 18 is old enough. Although we found that our Facebook users swayed more towards agreeing with Katie and Instagram against. This draws clear parallels between the age of the average user of these social media platforms but more importantly how passionate our patients are about cosmetic surgery. See below for the percentage breakdown comparing Facebook and Instagram users' votes.
