Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, is a procedure that reduces breast size, weight, and volume to improve physical comfort and overall wellbeing. It can relieve discomfort caused by large breasts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, or difficulty with physical activity.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction (also called mammoplasty or sometimes ‘boob reduction’) is a procedure that can help you feel lighter, more comfortable, and more in balance with your body.

Breast reduction surgery works by reducing the size, weight, and volume of the breasts. This is done by removing any extra breast tissue, fat, and skin that’s causing discomfort or making things feel out of proportion.

Once your breast reduction surgery is complete, the breasts are carefully reshaped to create a natural-looking result. The nipples are repositioned to complement the new breast shape, helping many patients feel more comfortable, move more freely, and enjoy greater confidence in everyday life.

Who is Breast Reduction for?

Candidates for breast reduction often experience physical discomfort or functional limitations due to the size and weight of their breasts. Common reasons include:

  • Chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain

  • Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts

  • Difficulty with physical activity or exercise

  • Issues with posture or clothing fit

  • This procedure can also have a positive impact on emotional wellbeing, helping patients feel more comfortable and confident in daily life.

What happens before breast reduction surgery?

Your MYA breast reduction surgery journey (sometimes referred to as a 'boob reduction') starts with a free consultation that you can complete from the comfort of home by phone or secure video call.

You'll have the chance to talk through your reasons for considering a breast reduction procedure, ask questions, and learn more about your options. You'll then meet your MYA surgeon and nursing team, who will guide you through every stage of your private breast reduction journey and help you feel informed, prepared, and supported.

"I had a breast reduction in October 2020 and I wend from a 32G to 32E. It is the best thing I've ever done. I was suffering with extreme shoulder pain which was stopping me from exercising, sleeping and just enjoying life.

I now have no pain and I rarely where a bra. They sit perfectly, so many people think I've had implants. They are that amazing. My surgeon was amazing from start too finish, such a lovely man and knew exactly what I needed."

Breast Reduction Surgery: What to expect?

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic by an experienced MYA surgeon. During breast reduction surgery, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed before the breasts are reshaped to create a lighter, more balanced appearance.

Some patients may also discuss a breast reduction and lift with their surgeon, depending on what they'd like to achieve. Throughout your MYA breast reduction journey, your surgical team will prioritise your comfort, safety, and wellbeing from admission through to recovery.

On the left are three progress photographs of the same woman: a pre-operative image, a photograph taken two weeks after breast reduction surgery, and another taken one month after surgery. The images show the gradual healing process and a reduction in breast size. On the right, the woman is smiling while taking a mirror selfie in a fitted burgundy dress, standing confidently with one hand on her hip. The collage highlights breast reduction recovery, healing progress, and increased confidence following breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reduction recovery

Breast reduction recovery is different for every patient. Most people are advised to take 7-14 days off work and gradually return to normal activities 6-8 weeks following breast reduction surgery. Your MYA nurses will monitor your healing, answer questions, and provide ongoing support through scheduled aftercare appointments. Swelling and bruising will continue to improve over 7-21 days, with breast reduction results becoming more visible as recovery progresses. You'll be supported throughout your MYA breast reduction journey and never feel like you're navigating recovery alone.

Medical illustration showing the stages of a breast reduction procedure. The four-panel diagram begins with a side view of a larger breast, followed by a visual representation of excess breast tissue and skin being removed. The next panel shows the breast being reshaped and the nipple repositioned higher on the breast. The final panel shows the completed breast reduction surgery result, with a smaller, more lifted breast shape and improved proportion. The illustration explains how breast reduction surgery reduces breast size while creating a natural-looking contour.

What is a gigantomastia procedure?

Gigantomastia is when there is excessive growth in the breast tissue. It can happen spontaneously or during hormonal changes such as puberty and pregnancy and result in extremely large breasts. It can affect one or both breasts, causing breast asymmetry.

Gigantomastia surgery is similar to a boob reduction in technique, however, the amount of breast tissue removed is greater (500g+ per breast) and the distance from the sternum to nipple pre-surgery is typically greater than 30cm. Your expert MYA surgeon will discuss the risks and limitations involved as well as the life-changing results this procedure can bring during the consultation process.

Does breast reduction surgery leave scars?

Due to the way a breast reduction is performed, scarring is inevitable. However, most breast reduction scars will sit beneath the nipple and so shouldn’t be too visible once healed and the swelling has gone down.

The most common type of scarring is anchor scarring - a T-shaped scar which goes around the areola, down, and curves under the crease of the breast - which is left when the surgeon makes the necessary incisions to remove the breast tissue.

Scars can take up to a year to fade but to reduce the severity, it’s advised you avoid sun beds and smoking, and, if you do choose to sit in the sun, wear a high SPF, broad-spectrum suncream to protect the scar and reduce an increase in pigment.

The first image shows the breast before surgery. The second image shows healing and visible breast reduction scars around the nipple and lower breast at six weeks post-operative. The third image, taken four years after breast reduction surgery, shows the scars appearing significantly softer and less noticeable, illustrating the long-term healing process.
