Why do some surgeons use strapping or a breast band?

Strapping and breast bands are used to encourage dropping and fluffing after breast augmentations. But do all surgeons use them?

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is a breast band?

A breast band is a velcro strap that sits above the breast implant bulge below the collar bone. They are commonly given to patients whose implants are placed under the muscle or with limited breast tissue, as they will initially sit high on the chest wall.

The breast compression band will encourage the implants to drop and fluff, before settling into a natural position.

Will I have to wear a breast band after surgery?

All MYA surgeons have their own technique when it comes to breast augmentations, and breast enlargements meaning they will all have different preferences when it comes to using strapping or breast bands.

It is not unusual for a surgeon to decide on neither strapping nor a breast band if they feel a sports bra will provide enough support and protect the patient’s new assets.

The length of time you’ll need to wear a breast band depends on how well you’re healing and your surgeon’s instructions.

How tight should a breast band be?

A breast band doesn’t need to be too tight to create the desired effect. As long as pressure is being applied and your surgeon is happy with your progress, you don’t need to worry about it being tight against your new breasts.

Are breast bands uncomfortable?

A breast band is designed to give you extra support and stability, so if you are instructed to wear one following your breast augmentation, you may experience some tightness, but this is completely normal.

If it’s too much to handle, make sure to contact your local MYA clinical hub, who will arrange an appointment with your surgeon to see what they can do.

Will my surgeon use strapping for my breast augmentation?

Strapping is the tight sticky tape which is wrapped around the breasts and chest to restrict swelling and help the breasts settle into place quicker than they would at a natural rate. The nipples will usually be exposed and can appear puffy and swollen during this time, but this is completely normal and part of the healing process.

Strapping is generally removed at 7-10 days post-op. Some patients find the strapping to be restrictive and it can sometimes cause irritation, so it may be removed early by a member of the clinical team in some cases.
